The fox news guy wasn't too wide of the mark. A lot of areas in Birmingham and many other cities are now muslim areas. As far as "extremism" goes I can't possibly put it better than this:

Islam is a Religion of peace as much as Christianity is. You take from each what you want. The extremists just manipulate the Koran to justify their agenda, as do the extreme Christians.
I know. Where did I defend Christianity and what has Christianity got to do with it? The reason these two religions are the largest is because they are and have been the most violent. You actually just prove my point for me. Extremism would not be a problem if the religion itself was peaceful. So extremism is not the problem here.
But there is also an argument that you can compare the life and example of Jesus to the Life of Muhammed. I will leave you to do that for yourself and see what you find.
Your initial post unfairly mentions just Islam, so I though it necessary to balance things out. There are those here that will jump on it as an excuse to hate Muslims. I can't see how my avoiding this could offend anyone, but if it does I apologise.
As for your second point, I think you need to address your definition of extremism. They twist and turn anything to suit their agenda. It does not matter that the original texts and structure were peaceful, they will manipulate them. Even Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism have had their violent followers. If they did not follow the religion they do, they would be fanatical about something else.
And yes, I have studied both religions, along with the lives of the main protagonists. There are many parallels, and many fallacies for each. Much research now confirms that both stories are more fiction than fact, and both claim persecution from day 1, which helps justify the violence they now use. Neither is right.
