Formula 1 Championship 2017-18

Pride of Lions

I am now official
I don't think anyone has started one off this year so here goes.

The Formula 1 World Championship is back with sleeker facster cars and making it more competitive.

Two weeks ago the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton into second due to pit stops etc.

This time, at the Chinese Grand Prix, Lewis made no mistake at all, with Vettel behind him in second place so it's even stevens after 2 races.

:134:

I have a feeling it may be a lot closer this season - Ferrari are looking good and Hamilton hasn't got the motivation of trying to beat Nico Rosberg every week.

Ferrari looking really competitive in the early weeks, and with Verstappen getting better all the time, we could be in for a far more interesting season than the past few.

:4:

I see JB is returning from retirement for a one-off in Monaco, as Fernando Alonso realises how shite McLaren really are and is off for a jolly at the Indy 500 that weekend.

Yeah, talk about Breakfast in America........

In other news, I see Vettel is fastest in 2nd practice for this weekends Bahrain GP.

So it's Bottas on Pole, with Hamilton on the front row too. Vettel third fastest.

Should be a good race.

Yes nice to mix it up a bit at the front finally! I'd fancy Lewis as things stand, but Vettel and Ferrari finding some form and reliability, so should be a good one!

Silly gamesmanship from Hamilton cost him dearly. Not quite sure what he thought he'd achieve doing that.

Yes he made himself look a complete fool with that. As if the stewards wouldn't notice. They can't even fart in their own car without Race Control knowing about it.

He should have pitted before Bottas. Simples.

Just shows that the top drivers know full well when and where to go with teams that are developing winning cars and soon to be challenging.

Vettel leaves Red Bull when they are on top. Joins Ferrari and within two years he is challenging again. While Red Bull have dropped off.

Same as Lewis did in leaving Mclaren for Mercedes. First year at Mercedes was not great finishing 4th but then they have been totally dominant since 2014. As for the state of Mclaren... Enough said.

Not technically F1, but horrendous news from Formula 4, where 17-year old Billy Monger, who was involved in a crash at Donnington on Sunday, has had both of his legs amputated.

F1 drivers past and present have pledged support, and Jenson Button has donated £15k via the lad's JustGiving page. Close to £400k has been raised so far.

Terrible news, all the best to the youngster.

That's terrible for the young lad.

What is good though is the support he is getting from the racing fraternity, good on 'em.

Best Wishes Billy, Get well soon.

Ok, this is a tiny bit odd. Live and let live, I normally say. But anyone who is into this sort of thing is just fucking weird in my book.

Williams and its title sponsor, Martini, are offering one winner and a guest the chance to spend the night sleeping in a Formula 1 garage, surrounded by Williams F1 cars. The two guests will sleep under Williams-themed bed-sheets, and eat and drink in Williams’ garage at Silverstone on July 25th, the night before the British Grand Prix.

The prize also includes a meet-and-greet with Brazilian veteran driver Felipe Massa and Team Principal Claire Williams with a guided tour of the garage before the winners catch some shut-eye between two 2017 Williams FW40 cars.

House Rules include: ‘No wearing a helmet in bed. Helmet hair is not a good daytime look’, and ‘In colder weather, tyre warmers will be provided. Do not use your own.’ The room doesn’t appear to have heating, a TV or an iron.

Great race from Azerbaijan today.

Safety cars all over the place, a red flag, Vettel driving into Lewis Hamilton as he tried to have a go at him (and getting a penalty for his troubles) and a near-certain Hamilton victory scuppered by a rogue headrest.

Eventually, Daniel Ricciardo won from Valterri Bottas, who overtook Lance Stroll on the line to take second.

Superb race, although I think Vettel should have been black flagged personally for his antics.

Agreed JPA. Should of been more than a 10 second penalty for Vettel. Ok, you can say Hamilton started it, but whatever your view, if you drive into the back of someone, it's your faulty - even on our public roads.

The headrest was the killer though I feel. That extra pitstop meant curtains for Hamilton.

What is it with fucking Germans and taking out British drivers in F1

1994 remember this fucking debacle......

Race[edit]
Schumacher took the lead at the start, with Hill second behind him. The order remained the same until lap 36. Hill was catching Schumacher when the Benetton driver went off the track at the East Terrace corner, hitting a wall with his right side wheels before pulling back onto the track.[2] Hill had rounded the fifth corner of the track when Schumacher pulled across the track ahead of him to the left. At the next corner Hill attempted to pass Schumacher; the two collided when Schumacher turned in. Schumacher was eliminated on the spot. Hill attempted to continue the race and pitted immediately, but retired from the race with irreparable damage to the car's front left suspension wishbone. As neither driver scored, Schumacher took the title.[3]

Schumacher was blamed for the incident by many Formula One insiders.[4] Subsequently the race stewards judged it as a racing incident and took no action against Schumacher. Schumacher, at age 25 was Germany's first Formula 1 World Drivers' Champion, but under highly controversial circumstances, although no action was ever taken against him. The race was won by Nigel Mansell, the 31st and final Grand Prix victory of his career, and his only F1 victory on a street circuit.

Post-race[edit]
Schumacher has always maintained that the collision was a racing incident, a view that met with a large degree of media cynicism, particularly in the UK.

Although Hill deliberately avoided becoming involved in the outcry at the time, in later years he explicitly accused Schumacher of deliberately driving into him.[5] Formula One commentator Murray Walker maintained that Schumacher did not cause the crash intentionally while his co-commentators for the race, former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer and pit reporter Barry Sheene both claimed that the crash was entirely Schumacher's fault. Patrick Head of the Williams team stated to F1 Racing magazine that in 1994 "Williams were already 100% certain that Michael was guilty of foul play", but did not protest Schumacher's title because the team was still dealing with the death of Ayrton Senna; this was after Schumacher's punishment for blocking the circuit during qualifying for the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix.[6] Schumacher has been blamed by the UK public for the incident – in 2003, the BBC conducted a search for "The Most Unsporting Moment" in which the Adelaide incident was nominated.[7] Hill's 1994 season earned him the 1994 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.[8]

Not for a second sticking up for Vettels action as they were stupid, but did he actually turn the steering wheel when he was alongside Lewis?. It looked like he took his hands off to gesticulate at him and the car pulled itself to the right. Either way as i said stupid and dangerous.

Vettel does though crease me up with his rants in the cockpit. Last season he did it effing and jeffing at being cut up. Happens to the best of us!.

Yes Melon, Vettel's team radio is far more interesting than most of the others' :19:

You can't beat a german ranting for entertainment value.

Vettel irritated that Hamilton didn't get a penalty as well! Hilarious!

So you're pissed off because Lewis didn't get penalised when you drove into the back of him, and then drove into the side of him while remonstrating because of your own incompetence? Er, ok then....

Cheating German bastard, I hope theres no clause in Brexit which says we have to give way to Johnny Foreigner when driving around a F1 track....
