Forget Bury & Northampton but who else?

After the performance last night I think the word "excitement" is not really appropriate for GFC unless you were talking about the whole relegation situation for the 8 bottom clubs. Last night's results have made nothing much clearer in the fight to avoid the drop - note how Oxford are still in the mix and on a bad run.
Oxford's situation is probably due to the wonderful manager they signed.

Ok my maths is craparoo so I have probably got it wrong but if we assume the worse and those (except bottom three) on 42 games win a game then all at 43 games with everyone having three remaining the table would be:

Gills 52
wombles 52
Walsall 51
Oxford 50
Oldham 50
Rochdale 49

Only three points separating 6 teams and we are in relegation form so I stick by my prediction that 54 needed this year.

That is quite a few ifs and each one adds to the improbability. We do not have the worst form of those in the mix.

I make a confident prediction that we will not finish on 52 points.

I stick by my prediction that 52 will be enough and I think none of the bottom 5 will get more than 50 points.

Last 6 games Form table for those teams above (we are 23rd with only Bury worse:

Rochdale 7th
Wombles 10th
Oldham 15th
Oxford 20th
Walsall 21st
Gills 23rd

I take your point but it wont actually happen as the Wombles are playing Oldham next on Saturday.

I also have a horrible feeling that there will be something riding on the Plymouth game beside the fact that they will be up for it if they can still clinch a play off place.

150-1 on betfair sportsbook for us to get relegated.

I reckon that's about right. Can't see us going down but a tenner on that would ease the pain of league 2 football a little!!

So, its now official - MK can not catch us. As we have been officially told by posters on here with supreme knowledge that we can not possibly be relegated we can safely plan ahead for Sunderland, Accrington Stanley and Luton Town.

Looking at the remaining fixtures I think it's pretty much all on Rochdale. They still play Charlton and Plymouth who will both likely still need points in the chase for the play-offs, and Oxford away next Saturday. 5 points from those games is a tall order- I'd much rather be us than them. And although Oldham, Walsall and Wimbledon have some friendlier fixtures on paper, there's still a strong chance at least one of those won't make up the points gap on us.

Way tighter than it should have been, but I stil think we'll be fine on 52. And although it looks unlikely on current form, that is assuming we don't pick up another point...

I think if the final day of Stimson's relegation season had never happened, most would agree with you.

You looked at it and thought, as you indicate, one out of four or five other teams will fail so we can fall back on that. Look what happened. Even though we were playing an already relegated side we succumbed with barely a whimper while every other team fought like lions for their status.

I note that Brizzle Rovers can not reach the play offs so if we manage to include Holy and Zak and finally show a bit of spine, we could get something there. I would lock the players in the room and just show them endless reruns of our away games at Peterborough, Rotherham, Charlton and Portsmouth. Then as a short sharp shock make them sit through yesterday's game again.

Hopefully, something will sink in.

I agree that that final day at Wycombe has made everyone a lot more nervy, myself included. The difference is that on that occasion it came down to one day; here there are still two opportunities for us to get points, and three other matchdays where things have to go against us for the worst to happen. For me, for us to go down, essentially about 2.5x the negative circumstance of the final day of 2009/10 needs to happen. It's not impossible and has eerie echoes of that season, but at this stage is so, so unlikely (trying to be positive...)
