Forest vs Villareal match thread

Not really, that would involve MGW being on the wing and it doesn't work. Anderson might actually do that better

Sangare missed his passes a couple of times but that languid style of his just looked calm and assured. Once he latched on to one of their attackers they had very little chance of shrugging him off. Looked potentially dangerous on the edge of their area.

Think of the Declan Rice role for England, but without always passing it sideways or back
Anderson tends towards the left anyway. I think he can play to the left of mgw but, from tonight, that would have been at the expense of CHO, who didn't quite get the run of the ball tonight but I thought they defended him well.

I thought we looked really good. Second half was better, but I have no idea what Villereal did to their team with he subs and how strong their team was at different points.

We certainly took control and had some outstanding one touch passing in that second half, with decent play in the first half

Negatives

- rusty passing
- too easy to shut down our wide players in the first half
- Elanga wide right was meh.
- Williams had one of his games where he just didn't look good enough. Worried me.
- couldn't score, obviously
-Dominguez's hair, which I can only describe as mid 90s David Beckham

Positives

- Anderson looked outstanding. As in, better than MGW outstanding. Some of the things he can do I have rarely ever seen a forest played do. Really drove us forward when he came on. Not sure how you accommodate both him and MGW

- Danilo and Sangare were a promising partnership in midfield. Sangare continued his good pre season and really ran the show.

- Milenkovic showed really good international experience and complimented Murillo well

-Aina was excellent. He is a great, physical PL fullback

-Yates I thought was brilliant when he came on.

- Awoniyi immediately put the shit up them as soon as he came on. He missed a chance, got muscled out of one (barely) but as soon as he was on, they had problems. One ball in to him and he's in and their defence shits itself.

- Wood also had chances and it took a point blank reaction save to stop him scoring a great volley.

- I liked the new RB. He looked more assured than Williams did.

- Toffolo did really well when he came on.

We should have scored at some point. Should have had a penalty too. We had them penned in for the final third of the game. We still have options to integrate into the wings. I thought we looked good.

First experience of the away end and I inadvertently got to be one of the first people to try the new safe standing
I agree with virtually all of this and your other posts, Pope. If anything I don't think Williams was all that bad. He had quite a difficult job and tidied up a few tricky situations pretty well but he struggled at times as well. Elanga wasn't helping him.

Yates was great when he came on and I think that helped Awoniyi make an impression because the Spanish midfield didn't know what to make of Yates. It was like they had never seen a Yates before.

I also wasn’t suggesting MGW being on the right wing
It would be a little lopsided though with him deeper than the CF and in an area between the 10 and RW

Just thinking out loud. Or Anderson sits with Sangare in the 4-2-3-1

I think Anderson is likely too attacking in nature for that. And his talents may be wasted there.

It's Nuno's problem to solve, but we've got a good player there.

Interesting game. Pretty much zero chances for either side but it allowed for a great tactical analysis of the whole team, which a few have done.

My summary is that the passing and interchange was sluggish and lost us possession too often but the way we’re trying to play is very encouraging.

Positives:

Milenkovic looks very assured, strong and of good pedigree

MGW is just a phenomenally good player and I’m pleased he plays for us

Anderson looked real top draw when he came on - infact, him, Yates and Dominguez made us look far better in that last 20

The team generally looks far more together and settled

Negatives:

Passing was really poor for most of the game and in the prem we’d have been punished

Sangare didn’t command the game like he had in the previous pre season games - he wasn’t bad at all, but I fear the pace may still be a challenge. He’s very forward thinking though!

Danilo has had a brilliant pre season but his passing along with Aina and Elanga was highly disappointing.

The wide players really struggled to make an impact once they were challenged on their favoured tactics

generally, Just can’t wait for the 17th - I Think we’ll be a real handful and hopefully far more progressive and accomplished than we have been in the last 2 seasons

Wolf would have liked it. Apart from the pen, he defended very well and did little going forward.

Except... He went on a very direct driving run but the ball just got away from his and he ended up body checking their #8 who then went off injured. Probably just winded. It was a highlight though. 😂
Apart from the penalty is a pretty important one though

A back 4 means he's a crucial defender (there are better out there) and limited from supporting the midfielder where there's none better

Don't like him in a back 4 for sure

You're thinking a 4-1-4-1, Finbar?
Sangare in front of the back four.
Elanga and CHO out wide.
MGW and Anderson operating behind the striker.

Oh, why didn't you say...?
Actually I agree with you that he's better in a three.

I haven't seen a replay of the penalty but I think it was one where he had his eye on the ball and made a clearance with the ball at waist high but the attacker came from outside his field of view and he kicked him at waist high. Maybe even on the follow through. I might have that all wrong but I think it was just unlucky rather than a major error of judgement.

"Overcooked pass from Yates".

4m 21s of highlights and thats the final comment from the video: prophetic

as it happens I am in Greece this coming week. anyone know how to get tickets for Thursday? website not making any sense.
In 2019 we went to Athens with my wife to watch Forest v Olympiakos and it was great.

I bought the tickets at the stadium box office the day before the match. The subway stops right in front of the stadium, you walk over something like a bridge and the ticket office is down and to the left (if I remember correctly).

On your way back from the stadium be careful and stay in a group with other Forest fans as there are some aggressive Greek fans.

I would go too, but plane tickets are very expensive right now.

Have a nice time!

👍👍
yes Greece is a bit hairy. olympiacos saying go to the stadium few hours before. not clear which gate is for forest yet.

MGW as the 8 for me, I didnt like him there before because if we lost pocession it was ropey but much more confidence in defence now. In that 8 cos I think he has the engine, the work rate and is great from deep. Then Id play ando in front of him because he simply is likely a better goalscorer. I dont like elanaga on the right but he's still prob our best option there (still not sure why CHO hasnt been tried on the right, seen him there v ocassionally during games but dont think ever a starter) so its tricky with line ups unless playing a back 3 with that diamond in the middle.

Then we have players like Silva and possibly one or two other threats in get in there. Genuine tough decisions to make but for all the right reasons.

Thought Nuno talked sense on the transfers and we may see an extra body or two late in the window if we find real value. Watching Spain.. and arsenal I guess, then I dont necessarily think we need an out and out number 9 striker
