Posted last night with a good deal of disappointment and anger at the outcome, slept on it and I’m still royally pissed off to be honest.
I get all the arguments for “great finish overall” “would have taken this at the beginning of the season” “surpassed our expectations” etc etc but to have finished where we have, given we occupied 3rd spot for half the season is an abject failure and I’ll bet the players, management and certainly Marinakis will feel exactly the same. The fall off from the first three quarters of the season has been spectacular in its shitfulness. At one stage we were 98% certain of CL football and now we’re faced with some two bob comp, visiting places most people have never heard of.
Let's face it- we were never 98% certain of anything. The dangers were clear in the January transfer window, we had some PSR room but either the manager or the club gambled on maintaining form, which dropped off almost immediately. Even just keeping JWP for the set pieces could have helped.
This does happen though. The media don't make a big thing of it, but last season Liverpool at the same point (8 games to go) were two points clear at the top of the table and ended 9 points adrift. Obviously Arsenal in 22-23. And Ajax this year were 9 points clear with 6 to go and lost the title to PSV. So we are not alone!
Fact is, we finished one point off 6th and 2 points off CL. That late, late equaliser against Bournemouth in the first game of the season. It's the equivalent of that.
Given our players played more minutes than any other squad, it's not a surprise they dropped off so much. A shame.
Given our form over the last 10 games, I genuinely fear for us next season with many more matches to stretch our already threadbare squad.
I can see a relegation season as a possibility given our form and if top players are not replaced, especially given our last 10 form. Teams frequently go from a season like this to relegation. Ipswich, Reading, Sheffield United all did it. We can't be complacent
Chelsea played their reserve team for most of their games in the tinpot cup this season, but unfortunately we don’t have their resources.
But West Ham did not and won it while having a disappointing but not disastrous league campaign in 14th
And Villa got to the semi and qualified for the champions league last year.
The type of players we may have been able to attract with CL football are now simply a pipe dream and we’re now going to be risking season ending injuries away at some freezing cow paddock in Kyrgyzstan, or somewhere equally crap.
We would have been able to attract only mercenaries who would never even look at our club otherwise. This would have been a danger, not a positive.
No player was going to look at Forest and choose us on the basis that we would be Champions League long term. They would only go big six like Cunha is. The only ones we could get would be ones the big six didn't want and who probably shouldn't be playing CL in the first place.
We have always been competing with the likes of West Ham, Brentford, Wolves , Bournemouth for the next step of players, who hopefully like MGW, Anderson, Kerkez, Hujisen etc will become players the big 6 covet. Having some form of European football will give us an edge for a change.
Oh well, we can only dream now what might have been and I hope Nuno has a new game plan or two up his sleeve because I fear the one that served us well for 3/4 of the season has been well and truly rumbled.
