There is a good documentary on Sky Docs called Howards Way, about Everton in the early 80’s
Listening to a lot of old fat blokes reminiscing.

Everton only turned good in the 80,s after they beat us!
Will have to give it a watch.

Also think they'd struggled to beat lower league Oxford in the League Cup which lead to our greater hope of an upset. Obviously we all know what happened next. Still think they owe us for all the glory that followed.

Answer to my own question. Drew at Oxford then beat them 4-1 days before playing us. Turned them around.

During the1990s I did some stewarding at Chelsea, after Chelsea had beaten Everton we were told to guard the Everton team bus as they were going through a bad run of results. As Howard Kendall approached the team bus he was met by Bill Kenwright and I witnessed Howard begging Bill Kenwright not to sack him and telling him he could turn it around. All the Everton players were on the bus, and half a dozen fans nearby, very embarrassing.
