Panicking Tottenham fans need to remember how Chelsea and Manchester City started last season and CALM DOWN

Twelve months ago, Pep Guardiola's men were nailed-on champions and Antonio Conte's job was on the line — and don't even get me started on Spurs' 'Wembley Curse'

Tottenham suffer frustrating goaless draw against Swansea

So, we're really going to do this all over again, are we?

We're really going to forget about last season, when some were crowning Manchester City champions in September and a few starry-eyed souls were debating whether they’d go the season unbeaten?

We’re really going to forget Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal twelve months ago, which had us all concerned they would struggle to finish in the top four, let alone win the title that eventually became theirs?

Some of the panic surrounding Tottenham ’s failure to break down Swansea on Saturday is laughable.

It’s September.

Spurs have played five Premier League games, three of them at home — one of which was against the title holders.

They battered Swansea, who deserve credit for riding their luck and keeping the bus parked firmly between the sticks.

To suggest there are reasons to be fearful over this result is ridiculous.

Moan, by all means, if Spurs were insipid, struggled to create chances or were mentally dining out on last Wednesday’s Champions League home win over Dortmund.

Not when they’ve come out of the game with 26 goal attempts and 75 per cent possession.

Not when Harry Kane has hit the crossbar as part of an onslaught from the home side.

Not when Mike Dean has to shuffle off the pitch embarrassed that he has denied them two penalties - one when Martin Olsson clearly handles in the box, the other when Jordan Ayew clips Serge Aurier.

It may have been the Day of the Long Knives down in the lower leagues, with managers falling like naive college kids in a horror movie, but Spurs fans in particular should know that, under Pochettino, it really isn’t how you start in the Premier League title race.

And as for this Wembley nonsense — enough already.

On their day, Swansea are a good team in their own right. They held Chelsea at the Liberty last season and beat Liverpool at Anfield under then-new boss Clement in January.
For all their issues, Spurs are still only five points off the top of of the table (Image: Action Images via Reuters)

Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier put it best afterwards as he waved away another Wembley question.

“It’s nothing to do with Wembley,” he said. “Every game we have played here we have looked comfortable, but it’s about having that clinical edge in front of goal. It’s just not happened, again, on this occasion.

“We have played very well, it was just the chances that we did not put away.”

The Twitter tacticians were out in force on Saturday night, questioning Pochettino’s team selection. Questioning the Argentine for dropping Serge Aurier, and for leaving Ben Davies and Mousa Dembele on the bench.

Quite rightly, the Spurs boss was incredulous at the charge.

Pochettino refusing to worry about Wembley Factor after dropping two more points in temporary home

Does it not occur to his critics that he might know a bit more than they do about the players’ physical condition?

Does he not have a duty of care to his players to manage their schedules to ensure they remain in peak physical condition?

Few managers in the Premier League play the same eleven in every single game these days.

It wasn’t disrespectful to Swansea to rest one or two. It was a belief in the quality of his squad that Saturday’s overall performance - if not the result - justified.

For all the shock and awe of Manchester City’s surge to the top, they are still just five points ahead of Tottenham.

As Pochettino’s squad continue to get used to their new surroundings, they have still been beaten only once.

Is it really all over bar the shouting just yet?

Agree with all of that, especially Mike Dean costing us the 3 points. He was the most culpable out of anyone on that pitch on Saturday.

Whilst I agree about Poch knowing the fitness levels of his players, I did feel that Saturday was a bit of a kick in the teeth to both KWP and Winks. If Aurier wasn't ready for back to back games and Davies needed resting then why didn't we just start with KWP as left wing-back? Son was again a square peg in a round hole in that position and it impacted our oval shape as a team.

I also massively prefer Winks in the middle over Sissoko when either Dier or Wanyama is playing. Like Dembele he just has that ability and composure on the ball that was missing. I felt bad for Eriksen as he had no-one on his wavelength to play one such football with which Winks would have brought to the team.

FWIW, Winks maybe still a few weeks out - he's building his fitness, but post training the pain is said to be still pretty intense - if that's true, it wouldn't surprise me to see him undergo another op.

As for KWP, I agree. He did well for England at Left back, and yes it would have been a big leap of faith to do it in the PL, but against Swansea, I think it was a gamble worth taking.

As for Sissoko, I've made my thoughts known about him since before we bought him, but again, I think he did well for all the time he was playing in the centre, but a RMid'er he isn't - even if he does play there for France.

Always someone else's fault with spurs. Never the teams fault or the managers. If we really wanted it we would have won comfortably regardless of his decisions.

We have the right to panic after getting 2 points out of Chelsea, Burnley and Swansea at 'home'. No sign of it getting any better unfortunately.

Some's nature is to panic - doesn't matter what the evidence is to the contrary; if the performances weren't there, if the domination wasn't there, then panicking might be justified., but the performances and the effort has been put in, there was no lack of effort - just a lack of width in my view and the absence of a decent ref or teh rub of the green.

It happens. I bet Liverpool fans aren't pulling out the razor blades like this.

Apart from that, the only real panic for some (as most have written us off from before the season even started) is a top 4 finish, something I still think we can do.

Is that really justified - haven't heard anyone chucking up excuses for anything other than what our performances have been - plenty of us have criticised Poch when it's been warranted, we just don't go into a melt down at every opportunity that the game will always give some..

It's the same old though, we dominate, play alright and still somehow can't finish teams off (at Wembley) if it was the odd game amongst other good wins people wouldn't moan as much.

I bet Liverpool fans are going mental as well! lol

I've seen some are calling for Klopp to be fired :3:

I don't really know what the answer was vs Swansea. Being more clinical would have definitely helped. If you look at Chelsea against us in the semi last season they scored with every shot, maybe we needed Dier to score a Matic-esque worldy to win.

Swansea were refusing to be drawn out of position and even when Aurier came on and was trying to fire crosses in they either blocked them or the box was flooded so we got nowhere near. Pace alone wouldn't have solved it as there was nowhere to run... Maybe Llorente earlier and just punting balls upfield for knockdowns? Teams setting up like Swansea really does ruin football as a spectacle, I get why they do it but it's not much fun for the fans. Agree with others we need more urgency earlier on - you know after 15 minutes a team is parking the bus, got to push hard for a first half goal not rely on there being a 2nd half to do it in like we did.

KWP will probably be needed on Wednesday so should he play twice in 4 days. ?

If he plays well, it won't be long before he's ahead of Trippier.

Why shouldn't/can't he play twice in four days?

Assuming a player has had a full pre-season/conditioning prior to the season starting; playing two, even three times a week shouldn't be an issue at the start of the season - it just means you do light training instead of intensive between games - later on in the season when you may well be carrying a knock or three, that's when fatigue can start really affecting performances.

I agree that we shouldn't be panicked after the unsuccessful home results this season.
After all, we can compensate those negative results by winning most or all of our away games!

If we pass by the shot of Kane against the horizontal bar, we can say that a significant factor we couldn't win against Swansea was the incorrect tactics concerning our movements with or without the ball and the positioning of our players inside and around the opponent's penalty box.

In general, the tactics we use to open up teams which are defending massively, aren't effective.

If during such a game, the individual actions and inspirations of our players fail to address this problem, there are no clear instructions from the coaching staff on certain movements and positioning of our players that could unlock the situation.

This is more than obvious when someone observes that our players just repeat during such a game the same ineffective movements with or without the ball while some times they look like they don't know what they should do.

Clubs where their fans are screaming that their manager has no plan 'b' set their teams up wrong and got the game management wrong this weekend and are getting pelters from their fans:

I wonder what they all have in common?

Conte
Klopp - who were also called 'laughable' by Shearer
Poch
Hughes
Pullis
Woy
Silva
Hughton

You've got to listen to this and if you don't laugh, you're already dead..

Sorry , we play Barnsley on Weds not Tues. So KWP would have played Sat and Tues. It's a tough one to call. Would he have made any difference against Swans ?

Hard to tell, I rate the lad, but given that he's predominately right sided, not sure he'd have given us the width the game craved.

Surely panic occurs when something unexpected happens.

Being kack at Wembley isn't unexpected, not by me anyway, so I'm not panicking, just pissed off that nothing has been done to change our dreadful results there last season.

Some defenders out, some defenders in in the transfer window , that's really going to make a heeeuuge difference isn't it ?

You mean, like against Dortmund?

We've got enough attack minded players as last season showed; a better question might be, are they the right ones;

Kane, Son, Lamela, Eriksen, Alli, N'koudou, Llorente....

How many should we have bought?

I jut don't see any panic on here.....and not really panic on our other forums / Twitter. What I read is unhappiness and pointing out things that have keep cropping up as issues and never get resolved.

What I also see is fans who back the clubs / managers every move, taking supercillious positions and making out those doing what I mentioned in the first paragraph are idiots.
