Football & Sexual Diversity

Dear fans,

In collaboration with other European Universities and LGBT Associations, the University of Seville (Spain) is carrying out a study of attitudes towards sexual diversity in football. In this study, footballers and football fans of different clubs are invited to complete a short questionnaire. The objective is to measure such attitudes at all levels of football in various European countries, from the most local categories to the top levels of competition.
The study is open to the participation of any footballers and football fans that want to join. Results of the study will be used to draw a map of attitudes surrounding sexual diversity in European football, and will allow the researchers to make comparisons among countries and cultures. All people over the age of 16 are invited to participate in this study. As English football fan, we would be very interested in receiving responses from you as representatives of your country. The online survey is accessible via the link below, and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete:

Many thanks for considering our request!

Joaquin,

I've looked at your questions are loaded towards finding the biased answers your survey seems to want, so I won't be taking part, but I will say this;

Most fans couldn't give two-****'s what a players sexual orientation is, but they do care whether they're good enough for their team, beyond that who gives a flying fig?

Poor survey and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it isn't yet another pure waste of public funding led by the EU - the mess Europe is in financially you'd think they'd have better more urgent priorities for funding.

Excellent response.

Absolute poppycock ... opposing crowds wouldn't care about the sexuality of one of the others' - where has this poster been ? Has anyone heard the songs about the player we like to refer to as Judas ? And how many gay players we know of are supported in EPL ? Totally poppycock! ;-(

I still think there are a lot of male fans who would have an issue if their team had an openly gay player. You only have to listen to the homphobic chants, the abuse our own fans aim at the "Gay Gunners" group. I've also heard our own fans aim homophobic abuse at our own players before.

one of the biggest issues for me is that football players are making it a taboo issue because there are NO openly gay players in our game and only a small handful in the world game.

In truth I perhaps don't blame them, as few would want to be the first openly gay Prem player, but it needs several to make it more towards the norm and therefore accepted as ignorance and novelty decreases.

I remember as a boy the vile chants towards black players, but of course that was a minority that was obvious, whilst being gay or straight isn't so clear cut.

In the game there are still several minorities that seem to struggle, such as Gay or even asian players, but until there are players from both areas actively open and involved, to many it will remain a course for abuse and ignorance

Jenas. "Ashley's (Cole) boyfriend" chants and comments that allude to rumours about two footballers and the use of a mobile phone. Of course, you'll never hear that kind of abuse aimed towards a fan favourite player.

That is news to meI must say ... by the way I read your comment I thought they were plenty ... wasn't this aimed at JJ from the goons after his transfer to Chelski? - rather than from our own ?

One occasion or multiple occasions, it doesn't matter. One is too many. Plenty of away fans have chanted it, but I have also heard some of our own fans do it.

Seven years ? five years ? a long time - any recent observations ?... As you know, tribal nature of games/support anything was possible - one by one is going... I await the abuse from ALL quarters when the gay footballers at the top level finally feel brave enough to 'come out'.

Agreed.

Sit with the park lane lot and everything and anything goes.

The problem is this grey area between what is perceived as "phobic" and what is (for lack of a better term, "banter." The relationship between player and crowd is something that will never go away.

Fans give players stick for all sorts and I imagine the same will happen within certain sections if a player is gay, the official is female etc. I'm certainly not condoning any action, especially racist or homophobic, but the way things are going, how long until anything other than positive chanting is banned from stadiums full stop?

Dave, it is getting boring now, the 'right to be offended' brigade have taken over, no putting the genie back.

I know what you mean Dave.

It is a fine line. However when it's banter you can normally sense it.

At the QPR game when I met you, Joey Barton was getting it lock stock and took it all very well. He was getting called a ******, prick, his mum is his sister. He found it funny.

I suppose it comes down to the individual.

Yeah I remember it well. There is a fair amount of hypocrisy too. Our fans can be as bad as any, yet we're the first to jump on things when its aimed at our own players. The "Kane talks like a long" chant for example - a huge deal was made about it, but I've heard things a million times worse than that from both our fans and others.

The thing is, every time someone makes a complaint it actually pushes it further away from intergratipn rather than brings it together. You can't have one thing being fair game and another being out of bounds. It may be because my own circle of friends are very liberal and everything is open for banter about each other and that dictates how I feel to a lot of these situations, but the overly PC brigade seems to gain more and more momentum that it does grow a little tiresome
