Floods

I live on a farm with a long drive along which used to run a pretty babbling brook, the cottage we are renovating has a river running down the side of the garden, for the last few days I have had a running battle at both places with flood water, thankfully the farm is just high enough up, but our drive was under water till last night, we have a SUV so were just able to get in and out, the cottage has a cellar which had at one point over seven feet of water in it, thankfully some foresight had made me buy a submersible pump six months ago, lovely bit of kit :35:

Cost to me, just hours and hours of work and a few free baths, no loss, minimal damage, I'm one of the lucky ones.

My heart goes out to all those suffering right now, those who have lost their homes, had their belongings destroyed, all those who couldn't get insurance due to flood risk, I hope you have a happier new year and good luck.

There is a huge piece of land in my town and beyond called the Murrough and it is the largest wetland wildlife area in Ireland. There is one really spot right beside the coast with a railroad running adjacent to it that people absolutely love.

Well one big storm and the vast majority of the greenery side right beside the coast has been washed away. The railway which is a critical commuter route is now severely under threat. People are going insane now that the local government didnt protect it. I get it to some extent but you're also talking about a 15km stretch and to be fair who would have thought one storm would sweep away up to 20m in land a huge section of it.

You can see pictures here: https://twitter.com/IrelandSkycam

Be interesting to see more before and after shots. I must admit its easy for people to say it now after it has gone to have a go at them would love to know what the cost would have been to protect it.

I think we all have to look at this very carefully. Global Warming is increasingly bringing these 'freak' storms to our doorsteps.

It's terrible to see land being washed away like that on the link provided. Heartbreaking.

There is uproar in York about why they opened the barriers on the river Foss side as it caused flooding that wasn't necessary in some parts of York. Thank freak we live on the other side of York where we are limited to alot of rain, a small swimming pool in the back garden where there is a dip and wind well yes alot of that too.

Agrees with you Juan. The river Ouse which floods every year and is renowned for it has been at it's worse again this year. Levels reaching 2000 really nasty last one.

I think there is a north/south divide. If half of this had gone on down south something would have been done years ago. They soon built the Thames Barrier when there was signs the Thames was getting higher. I'm not blaming this goverment, the last one was as much to blame. Lookat the Somerset levels, years it flooded befor anything was done. As long as south of Watford is ok, dont bother with the rest. The chairman ( ?) of the envoirment agency is sunning himself in the West Indies, he could'nt care less, bet he's on £100,000 a year........another one for my purge list :17:

Its very sad for the people that can't get insurance. Even trying to sell their houses will become near on impossible.

Last time I looked, I was sure Somerset was south of Watford.

It's just not true that more is done in the South. We just haven't had the same heavy rainfall that the north has had recently. If we had, then nothing has been done since Lewes in Sussex last flooded, and it would do so again. Correction, they spent £15,000 on a new Culvert - whoopee!!!!

Thank goodness for your pump then Juan!

Just awful seeing people's homes wrecked AGAIN like this.

Nature really is a powerful beast

Glad yam ok Juan dude really am it is really sad to see people affected by these storms i just keep thinking for them when will it end but it seems to be carryin on and on forever now ffs

Smethwick may not be pretty or Idyllic in any shape or form but it's 570ft above sea level and 110 miles from the sea . Water doesn't run up hill.
