Giovanni Simeone: Tottenham’s 1st signing of the summer?
It is well known that Tottenham are still the only Premier League club not to make a signing this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Spurs will be active in the summer transfer market and with one month to go it looks like they are getting into gear for some late deals.
In recent hours, a new rumour has emerged and it should excite Tottenham fans.
The son of Diego Simeone heading to Spurs…
Argentinean giants River Plate are holding a board meeting on Wednesday.
The second item on the agenda, according to Argentine journalist Lucas Ajuria, is regarding the “imminent sale of Giovanni Simeone to England”.
Ajuria confirms that Tottenham are battling with Fiorentina to sign the son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone.
If Spurs bring in Giovanni Simeone, they will pay part of the fee to River Plate, where the youngster came through the ranks.
That money is part of the solidarity mechanism of FIFA that gives the first club of a player a percentage of the transfer if the player moves from one country to another.
Introducing Giovanni Simeone
Just 22, an attacker, Giovanni Simeone, emerged at River Plate, and also played for Banfield in Argentina.
Last season, Giovanni Simeone played at Genoa in Serie A, where he scored 12 goals in 35 appearances.
Once this move is confirmed, there will no doubt be many people wondering why Diego Simeone didn’t buy Giovanni for Atletico Madrid.
Perhaps Spurs are taking advantage of the current transfer embargo placed on Atletico?
A Harry Kane back-up?
Much like his father, Giovanni Simeone is noted for his determination and drive. The 22-year-old is a striker that can also play off the right.
Spurs have many connections with Argentina, including current first team member Erik Lamela and coach Mauricio Pochettino.
This link with Argentina goes back to after the 1978 World Cup when Spurs signed Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa.
