Gundogan's second is a thing of beauty.

Great result tonight, can afford to rest a few in the home leg.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on BT Sport: "An excellent result. We are almost in the quarter-finals. Champions League is always 180 minutes and we will take the game seriously but it's an excellent result.

"We are still in February and in the Premier League we are in an amazing position and we are almost in the quarter-finals, we are in one final (Carabao Cup) and on Monday we have the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup."

David Silva's substitute appearance means he has now played more games in all competitions this season than any other player across the top five European Leagues without suffering a single defeat (28 games and no defeats).

Since the turn of the year Aguero has scored 14 goals in 11 matches - no player has netted as many across the top five European Leagues in 2018.

"Ilkay Gundogan is an extraordinary player. Last season we missed him a lot with injury for six months and that's why we are so satisfied, not just the quality but personality to play," Guardiola told BT Sport.

Hopefully everyone's come through OK, notably Kompany and Delph.
Great to see Sane and Merlin back, and getting a little match practice, with only one game now before the cup final.
Next Monday at Wigan will be interesting with the selection, and you're right, Dub.
Foden to start, and maybe Toure as well. It was noticeable that he wasn't in the squad here.

Highlights Plus Player Ratings

It's wonderful having back ups like Gundogan and Bernardo.

Just think, this time last year that would've been Fernando and Navas.

I'll probably get lambasted for this but I think Vinny's days are coming to an end. As I said in my player ratings, he was simply not at his best last night.

I don't think its an age thing but I do think his injuries have caught up with him.

As a true professional as he is I wonder if he'll call time on his playing career before the club make that decision for him?

Very true BD.

This is obscene and beautiful at the same time. Remember Merlin doing similar against BMG at the Etihad a couple of seasons ago.

His nickname at Monaco apparently was ‘Bubblegum’ after the way the ball seemed to stick to his feet. He seems to be able to manipulate space and time to create a zone around him just like David Silva.

The Magician’s Apprentice. :005:

It's a shame that gif didn't run for a fraction longer to catch him nutmegging the Basle that was closing in.

Notably rusty last night with some undercooked passes, think he improved as the game progressed though.

I think he'll see out his contract, good person to have in the dressing room even if he doesn't make it on to the pitch.

Is his contract until the end of next season? - like you say invaluable around the dressing room. But still has the World Cup in Russia to star in and if that goes ok then who cows for next season. Maybe it is confidence/uncertainty at present, every twist/turn/tackle laden with 'what if'.
