Right or wrong decision?

La Liga are planning on taking FIFA to court to stop the World Cup expanding to 48 teams.

Infantino was told that Europe's professional leagues had to be consulted on all decisions which affected professional footballers.

According to La Liga, that consultation did not take place.

So the new format will be:

16 groups of 3 teams, top 2 qualify for last 32 KO stage

80 matches in total and a 32 day tournament.

World Cup: Fifa to expand competition to 48 teams after vote

The World Cup will be expanded to host 48 teams, up from 32, Fifa has decided.

An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams will precede a knockout stage for the remaining 32 when the change is made for the 2026 tournament.

The sport's world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.

The number of tournament matches will rise to 80, from 64, but the eventual winners will still play only seven games.

It's a 'let's line FIFA's pockets' decision - it will be a massively early boring rounds competition now.
UEFA need to show they can stand up for the European confederations., my guess is they won't.

They want national teams such as India and China to be able to qualify so FIFA can generate even more money.

Specifically for the extra 16 countries that go to the WC that would not otherwise have gone, the opportunity to play in the WC finals and the media attention and coverage it brings will be great for football in those countries. It does devalue the overall tournament from the point of view of the top 20 countries that always qualify, but their perspective isn't everything... it raises the profile of and enthusiasm for football in other parts of the world, so it's not only about cash for FIFA - or am i being naive?

Sounds about right, also vote catching from the minnows.

So all about money and votes, most unlike FIFA :3:

It's about expanding the game. China is investing very heavily in football and rugby. Fifa is being intelligent about this without destroying the WC. Let the fringe teams fight it out in a pre tournament tournament but call it the same thing. Then get on with it.

Martin Samuel calls it right for me.

Lot's of unknowns that Samuels is guessing at.

They have to expand. The NFL, rugby (both League an Union) are expanding internationally. The competition for young athletes is incredible.

FIFA are institutionally retarded. A fact we have to live with.

Flogging a dead horse.

Trying to save international football by inviting minnows

One thing I've heard little talk over is how this will just bankrupt hosting countries in order to create football infrastructure that they simple don't need/can't maintain afterwards.
