Ex-Imps Discussion Thread

Sad news.

His method of penalty taking was just to hit the ball as hard as he could and if it hit the goalkeeper there was a good chance it would still go in.

As for defending the goalmouth - just boot the ball as high and as far as he could - "Good old George!" was the cry.
My Dad always reckoned George Peden used to close his eyes when he took penalties and just leather it as hard as he could! He was certainly a 100% effort, committed left back.

According to records supplied to me George Peden took a total of 15 penalties for the Imps between September 1967 and December 1972.

Of these, he scored with 13 of them and had two saved. One of those was by ex-Imp Terry Carling for Chester in a League Cup replay in December 1968 (although it was a memorable game I don't have a recollection of the penalty). The other was at Aldershot in December 1967, saved by Tony Godfrey. From Maurice Burton's description: "There was a blur of leather as the ball flashed goalwards - and then the goalkeeper's arms went up instinctively and Peden's penalty attempt had ended in failure."
Proper match reports in those days…..even if MB sometimes seemed to be at a different match to me!

Scully signs for Exeter.
Exeter are in real trouble, the financial realities of fan ownership are coming home to roost.

Three of last season's relegated sides (Exeter, Northampton, Port Vale) are in the bottom four and the other (Rotherham) are also in the bottom half.

That and by their own admission, significantly overspending in previous seasons.
