Eric Dier: Should We Be Concerned?

I took the original Kyle Walker transfer speculation as utter nonsense and look what happened. And now we read column inches about the possibility of Eric Dier heading to Bayern Munich.

Said on the other thread, selling Walker put a "we are open for buisness as normal" sign over the club if we wanted it or not.

Just had a read on the front page, people going on that he is a CB. He plays there but that doesn't mean he is a CB. He is average as a CB.

He wants to play DM, he is at his best as a DM, not hard to figure out where to play him really.

Wasn't there an article about Dier's speed and that he was one of the fastest on the team when we still had some people with wheels.

The year before last, a lot of fans thoughts he was utterly instrumental to us and irreplaceable in the role he had, of shielding the back four. Then Wanyama was bought who does the job a bit, but not that much, better and Dier has been cast adrift. I didn't think we needed to spend in that position and would have liked what we paid for Wanyama put towards buying a top level CAM, as that is a weakish area when Eriksen is off-peak.

Although Dier offers us a bit of cover at RB and CB, he can't do either well enough to hold down the role in a top 6 side. His body language often doesn't look good, and the errors he makes are down to not playing much and not in his best position.

I feel a bit sorry for him really.

Still think Dier allows us to transition to attack more quickly than Wanyama.

That he does 80. His vision is far superior. But Wana is one of Poch's favs, so Dier will always be second choice to Wana. To his credit is a top DM himself.

Wanyama has taken the instrumental, irreplaceable role to another level, in addition to his strength and presence he has an adeptness in possession Dier cannot match. His DM partnership with Dembele is the best in the league and key to our improvement and dominance as a team. Dier's error propensity makes problems for himself and others often accentuated by his sloppiness on the pitch.

Kante and Bakayoko will give them a run for their money, but can't see another partnership better or equal too Moose and Wana.

That's somewhat subjective Rich.

I disagree 80, another example of Dier's erroneous ways happened as recently as pre season not attacking the ball and letting it bounce caused others to intervene. We were lucky not to give away a pen. Sloppy.

Wanyama is 26 and has been playing consistently for 3 4-5 years for Pochettino. Most of 23 year old Dier's mistakes are mental errors from lack of experience. I think he has the potential to be better than Wanyama.

Dier is a full international 80, hailed by many as a top class DM instrumental to our cause at 22 yrs old. Now that his errors are being aired he becomes an inexperienced player at 23. Most of Dier's mistakes are of his own making, not enough due care and attention.

So you don't think Dier has the potential to correct those flaws?

I think for £50m we could get a better footballer with higher levels of concentration.
