Thoughts?

my thoughts are. How on earth have I become so detached from top flight football that some I have never heard of and of the ones I have I knew just about half of who they play for.

Trent Alexander-Arnold. Who is he?

Still, at least Southgate had the balls to dispose of Joe Hart.

Never heard of any of the goalkeepers, but glad Joe Hart has been dropped. JOHN STONES ???? - be intersting to see his stats for how many goals he costs us and how many times he gets caught in posession farting about with the ball in our defensive third while he 'comfortably' carries the ball out of defence ??

Butland has had plenty of practice and long been touted as the next great England 'keeper. Pickford relatively inexperienced joined Everton from Sunderland, good shot stopper, thought in some quarters not to be commanding enough. Pope came from nowhere when Heaton, who would have been one of the three, was injured, been very impressive.
Couldn't agree more about Stones.

I honestly think it's a decent squad considering how few English players are actually in the greed is good league. Central midfield is a problem, but Loftus-Cheek shows promise.

Alexander-Arnold is a very good player.

Not going to win the world cup obviously but it will be better that 2014, though that isn't difficult

Its not a bad squad overall - at least there's some continuity and a reasonable bit of quality creatively, apart from STONES. Why can't managers see his shortcomings when they are so obvious to the rest if us?

Yes PL full of overseas players. That’s why with a few exceptions many of us are asking who they are ! Still looks like Southgate is shaking things up and has a good sprinkling of youngsters in there.

Bit heavy on defenders isn't it? We playing 6 at the back with Stones breaking forward on 60 yard may runs (15 of them with the ball)

On serious Henderson over Shelvey - yep with have gone with a wooden doll over someone who can deliver a 70 yd ball to feet, just think what we could have done with that & speed we have upfront. Instead we have someone who is just not & never has been an international grade player. Looking forward to him giving the ball away at this level as usual & to boot hi is captain - lol.

I used to watch Nick Pope play for Bury Town in the Ryman League, So very happy for him. He was pretty skinny back then with a Beatle hair cut.

Henderson?? - Forever gives away the ball, poor passing has really cost us in the past. Yet he is Southgate bum chum so had to go.
Stones?? - too many mistakes in him.
Jones?? - just what do people see in him
Wellbeck? ??- he would be tackling his own player to try and get glory of scoring. Hasn't played nearly enough football this season. Thought you were going on for Gareth??

Decent squad IMO and one that's definitely been picked on form rather than name.

Not packed with talent but a young one that could get somewhere (not necessarily winning the WC or Euro's). We already know that we don't have many good ST's and questionable options in CM so it's about as good as we're going to get.

I'd personally have taken Hart just for a bit of experience around the squad but I can understand why Southgate hasn't. Stats wise, Pope is the best GK in the squad but I imagine we'll go with Pickford.

Cahill was on obvious choice despite not playing too much. We'll probably be playing a 3 at the WC and Cahill's done that a lot at Chelsea and, unusually, is a right footer who prefers being on the left of it.

Correct decision not to have Wilshere in there. Him not going was never going to be good for Lallana, who's also been injured but I prefer the latter and he's on the stand-by list anyway.

A few people not sure on Welbeck, and I'm inclined to agree to a point, but he's, what, 15 in 30 for England? Not a bad record.

CM worries me, but I quite like Loftus-Cheek. He looks like he could be a proper all-round midfielder to me.

Not sure how they put players in the position categories, and I know Young and Delph have played this season at LB but they're midfielders to me! Likewise Lingard's a striker!

I think this squad is about the best he could do with the limited resources he has at his disposal. It's a sad reflection on the state of English football tbh!

We have lost a generation of young English talent swamped and not given a chance to flourish under the weight of already nurtured foreign imports that now totally dominate the PL!

It's a sad indictment that a lot of the young English players who won the under 17 and under 20 World Cups last year know they now have little chance of progression and development into top footballers in the PL and are now seeking regular football in foreign leagues. The likes of Jadon Sancho who is starting to light up the Bundesliga along with Lookman, Oxford, Hinds etc. I think more and more English players will go abroad in the future because there is no future in the top division here. Just sad!

Other than Harry Kane. I doubt the jerries would pick any of the others in their squad.
Sterling, walker and Alli as standbys.

Might do well for once then!
