Over one million fans try to buy tickets for England's U17 World Cup semi-final v Brazil

More than one million people tried to buy tickets to Wednesday's U17 World Cup semi-final in Kolkata, causing FIFA's website to crash.

FIFA have changed the semi-final location from the heavily waterlogged pitch at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati to Kolkata down south. But that hasn't dampened the demand for tickets, despite some supporters now unable to attend the highly-anticipated fixture.

There were 66,000 tickets up for grabs at Salt Lake Stadium to see the match, but many fans were unsuccessful after finding out they were only one in a million looking to attend the same fixture.

Reportedly, 3.5m people have applied for tickets to go to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so the demand for this youth fixture really is exceptional.

FIFA have released an apology for their website crashing, and to fans who have had money deducted from their credit cards before a ticket confirmation email had even been sent to them.

"Following the decision to reschedule the semi-final, the logistical challenges were numerous," an official FIFA statement explained. "From the moments tickets were put on sale at 20.30 IST until today, more than one million people tried to access the ticketing portal of the service provider.

"Tickets for the match have now sold out and both FIFA and the LOC are incredibly grateful to every single fan who tried, successfully or not, to purchase a ticket.

"Collectively, we are very sorry that a number of fans experienced technical difficulties, a huge queue, and in some cases, a deduction of monies without confirmation or ticket."

England will renew acquaintances with Brazil in the U17 World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

The Young Lions secured their spot in the last four of the competition on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over USA, before the South Americans knocked out Germany on Sunday to set up the tie.

It means the nations will meet again, having played a World Cup warm-up at Shrewsbury Town in September when it ended 0-0 before England won a penalty shoot-out practice.

And head coach Steve Cooper says his team will approach the game as they have done in every other match they’ve played in India so far.

“We won’t change our plan,” he revealed.

“We’re working towards a way which we want to play in any game, with respect to a ‘lesser nation’ in a qualifier or if we’re playing in the semi-final of a World Cup.

“Our intentions will always be the same and that’s the whole point of having a plan, you can put it into action in the most extreme of situations and it doesn’t come any bigger at this moment in time than the semi-final of a World Cup.

“It’s the biggest game these boys can play, so we won’t change our plan, we’ll be very respectful of the opposition and we’ve made it clear how we want to go about our work.

“We played Brazil recently, they’re a good team with a great coach.

“You want to be playing these games and playing against the best, and that’s what we’ll be doing.”

Well it's a re-run of the UEFA U-17 final, we were brilliant to beat Brazil 3-1 to get into this World Cup final, and to meet them we pounded the USA into submission, it could easily have been 10-1 not 4-1, sojust finished watching the game and we looked like we had a bit more swagger about us and were set up well..

But beating Spain is going to be really tough, they play just like their national side do.

I'm pretty sure the final will be on Eurosports - it will well worth the watch.

our national side maybe struggling, but our development sides are all doing themselves proud and competing in the later stages (or winning) these competitions..

If only we could get them the chances at PL level so that they could continue their development....

Rhian Brewster hat-trick has England dreaming of more success

The golden glow emanating from St George’s Park spreads ever farther and wider. England’s youth teams have tasted success in tournaments in France, Georgia and South Korea this year — now the under-17s, who reached the final of the European Championships in Croatia in May, have a chance to claim England’s first World Cup in this age group after they beat Brazil 3-1 in Calcutta to advance to the final. Until this year, England had not made a World Cup final in any age group since the senior triumph of 1966 — now they have reached two in five months.

Rhian Brewster was the headline act, with the 17-year-old Liverpool striker scoring his second successive hat-trick, having also netted three in the quarter-final against the United States. There were also superb displays from Phil Foden, of Manchester City, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, a Chelsea academy player.

Reaching Saturday’s final against Spain — who beat Mali 3-1 in the later semi-final — continues an extraordinary year of youth success for a country habitually gloomy about its senior national team, with England having won the under-19 European Championship and the under-20 World Cup, and reached the semi-finals of the under-21 European Championship. No longer can anyone keep up the pretence that the cupboard of footballing talent is bare; in fact it appears to be overflowing.

The big question, though it is one for another day, is whether any of these richly promising players will get the chance to break through at their clubs.

Steve Cooper, the manager, said: “It is an amazing achievement to score a hat-trick in a quarter-final and a semi-final. I am not normally one to talk about individuals but to do that needs a special mention.

“If you see the way Rhian speaks to the rest of the players in the dressing room about the service he is getting then it says a lot about him. And it is not just his goals but the effort he is putting in for the team, we want to win the ball back as quick as we can and we want to press and that starts with your No 9. Rhian is a goalscorer but he is more than that. He is a fantastic character.”

England’s achievement is all the more impressive because they are missing arguably their outstanding talent at this level, Jadon Sancho, who was recalled after the group stage by Borussia Dortmund, his club. Yet, against a Brazil side who overcame Germany in their quarter-final, Cooper’s side began with confidence.

Hudson-Odoi teased in an inswinging cross, Brazil’s back line were caught square, and Brewster, timing his run perfectly, reacted quickest after Gabriel Brazão palmed out his volley.

Joel Latibeaudiere made a superb challenge to foil Brenner, but then Brazil ought to have equalised. England were undone by a short corner and a low cross was allowed to come through to the far post, where Vitão put his finish wide. With England reeling, Brazil were getting in behind at will, and Paulinho was afforded far too much space in the penalty area when he shot wide.

An equaliser seemed inevitable and in the 21st minute it arrived. A lovely exchange of passes between Wesley and Paulinho allowed the latter to get a shot away and Curtis Anderson could not parry the ball to safety, leaving Wesley to nip in and prod the ball into the net.

England responded well in what was becoming an extraordinarily open semi-final and both sides missed clear chances to take the lead within 30 seconds. First Latibeaudiere mistimed a free header after Brazão missed a corner, then Brenner took advantage of a wonky England backline to run clean through on goal, but rolled his finish wide.

Brazil, though, looked just as vulnerable at the back, and after England steadily built pressure, they cracked. Foden sent Steven Sessegnon streaking to the byline and his low cross reached Brewster, who adjusted his feet brilliantly before firing in off the post.

In 29C heat and 70 per cent humidity, it was Brazil who seemed to be flagging after the interval. Hudson-Odoi clipped a delightful ball to an unmarked Brewster with the Brazil defence stretched, but the Liverpool forward could not keep his header down.

Brazil rallied and Anderson saved well from Brenner’s deflected shot. A long through-ball sent Yuri Alberto through the middle, but Latibeaudiere’s sliding challenge did just enough to put him off. Paulinho skipped inside a few challenges, but could not trouble Anderson with his side-foot effort.

But after a cooling break, it was England who turned up the heat and Brazil melted. Emile Smith Rowe, a substitute, rolled a perfect centre across goal and Brewster was waiting at the far post to complete his hat-trick with a cool finish.

Brazil were beaten, and the ease and confidence with which England played possession football in the Brazilian half in the final moments, effortlessly frustrating their opponents with confident, precise passing, was a sight to inspire optimism — and not just for Saturday’s final.
England team and ratings

England (4-2-3-1): C Anderson 5; S Sessegnon 6 (T Eyoma 88), J Latibeaudiere 7, M Guéhi 6, J Panzo 6; G McEachran 7, T Oakley-Boothe 7; P Foden 8 (N Kirby 87), M Gibbs White 7 (E Smith Rowe 68 7), C Hudson-Odoi 8; R Brewster 8

Foden is going to be a super star and soon. Brewster is also destined for great things. Don't however overlook the contribution made by our own Oakley-Boothe. Doesn't do the flashy things but rarely gives the ball away and has wonderful positional sense in midfield.

I have watched most of their recent cup run and get great pleasure from their enthusiastic team play. Some won't progress but I will be watching their progress with huge interest.

They will certainly give Spain a good game.

It was brilliant comeback.

Loved watching it.

The future does give me hope.

Foden could end up being a very special player.

Well done England.
