Egan to Sheffield Utd

They paid us an initial £400k, plus £25k for every 20 games, he's played 70 games, so Brentford will have paid us a total of £475k, so we're owed approximately £700k. Nice.

A total of approaching £1.2m for a player we can't really claim to have brought through our youth system is pretty good going.

I may be having bad day but I think that 20% of £4m is £800K i.e. Brentford would owe us something like £325K.

No, I think you are having a bad day. Assuming they have only paid 3 times 25k for the number of completed '20 games' he played, ,that is 75k. Plus the initial £400k = £475k. So they owe us 20% of 4m minus £475k = 20% of £3525000 =£705k

Sell on clauses don't work like that, Bert, it's normally 20% of their profit. So if they paid 475k and sell him for 4m, that's a profit of just over 3.5m. They'd owe us 20% of that 3.5m

I was under the impression that it's 20% of any profit made on the deal, so £3.525m our cut would be £705K, I may be wrong though.

It's a fallacious discussion because none of it will go into the playing budget anyway. When was the last time a windfall was used to strengthen the team?

Anyone expecting us to go on a £700k spending spree will certainly be disappointed but to say none of it will go into the playing budget is also incorrect. If we are in desperate need of one or two new faces in January this will make that more likely. We budget for £400k - £500k in player sales each season. If income suffers the playing budget suffers so at the very least the playing budget won’t suffer as much in the near future as it would have done otherwise.
