Do You Trust The Police?

Lots of news stories around at the moment concerning the Police and their behavior either historically or recent cases so I thought I would ask the question, do you trust the Police?

Please feel free to give your reasons both for and against.

I voted yes cos in general I do today. We are all aware of times gone by and certain elements of the police who weren't law abiding.

There will still be Police officers who can't be trusted because the very nature of people means that there will be bad eggs in the police too.

I wild probably have preferred an option in the middle of yes and no. I know that's pedantic.

My service means I am involved with alot of professionals which include the police, courts, probation etc. so I get to know many on a 1-1 more personal basis.

We are heavily involved in police training in N.Y so get to hear both sides. I understand the cynicism that is part of there job as they are front line of it all. It doesn't mean I condone it.

I would hope today there is more reason to trust the police. I remember a conversation with some lads many years ago who lived on the edge of the edge law;

The conversation went along the lines of "would they want to call the police if some criminal activity happened to them?" They said "yes" so then I asked them "why they hated the police so much and wasn't it more to do with the fact they broke the law and they got caught?"

I know I have widened the topic here however I wanted to add some specifics to discuss as well as the general view

In general I do but I appreciate that people in all walks of life can be untrustworthy. I guess really the question is to the possibility of systematic faslsifications within the culture of the police organisation. I don't belive this to be a (general) problem and as such I'm voting yes.

I guess it depends on the context. If my house got broken into, I'd call the police whether in the UK or Malaysia even if it's only for the insurance claim.

Do I believe that the Police are all completely honest and trustworthy? Not on your Nelly.

About a dozen of my friends are Police, or ex Police. In general, they are a great bunch, and I would trust my life with them. One in particular is putting his life on the line every day fighting drugs in Sussex. He is regularly threatened by the gangs dealing, and with a young daughter, I worry about him. There is nothing that would stop him, and I respect him for that.

Are they 100% trustworthy? Nope. They are human. They make mistakes, they have weaknesses. They aren't superheroes, and I think we need to realise this sometimes. The same with Doctors and other front line services.

Generally they do a difficult job and most do it well.

Do I trust any large organisation totally? No. I trust the people at the top less than those at ground level.

I've voted yes because I'm not anti police (if I do something wrong and get caught, that's my fault not theirs) but I don't have 100% trust in anything .. would rathered a 'mostly' type of option.

I do trust the police.

But as said above, with any large-scale organisation, there will be less-than-trustworthy components. Temptation is there, whether it's backhanders, outright bribing, access to drugs, etc. There are bound to be some who go beyond the boundaries and break the rules (and law) to get ahead, or to get what they want.

And with anything, in general, power corrupts, so those at the top have more to gain (or maintain) by acting on the margins of what is acceptable, and indeed legal.

In any walk of life there is good and bad and the Police force would be no different.

The majority would be trustworthy though , of that I have no doubt.

By the way I always wanted to be a mounted policeman.

Do we trust all priests? Lots are naughty.

Do we trust all teachers? Lots are naughty.

Do we trust all lawyers? Lots are naughty.

Do you trust your best friend? Lots are naughty.

I trust the police like I trust humanity.

Trust where you can but never trust anyone 100percent

Qualified yes. I've had a couple of occasions where I've personally experienced issues with Police who were massively out of order to the degree that I had intended to lodge official complaints (I was actually the victim of crime) but in the end it wasn't worth it.
However I do trust them in the main.

Hell no!

Just check out how many deaths there are in police custody, then check how many officers have ever been tried and found guilty, you have your answer, so no, having been on the receiving end of the "mattress treatment" I have to say no, not in the slightest.

I am also friends with a gent who till a few years ago was a chief superintendent, I can't pass on details of our chats, but he paints a sorry picture of institutionalised racism and crooked cops

I am not saying they are all bad, I've known some great ones, it just seems that the longer they serve the more disillusioned they get, the more it "sours" the person, still no excuse to taser unarmed people to death

Your Chief Supt friend will presumably have joined the police sometime in the 70's given he retired several years ago and therefore would have completed his 30 year service. So yes i imagine he had a few stories to tell as policing in the 70 's and 80's and even 90's was a different world to today. Policing now is unrecognisable to then as he will no doubt tell you. Presumably and quite rightly you don't want to pass details of corruption, racism on this forum but will make the authorities aware. As from what you say there are officers out there drawing salaries and hefty pensions (if like your chief supt friend they are retired) from the tax payer when really they should be facing scrutiny from the authorities.

Worked with works police for five years , some good some arrogant wankers. I was always polite and curtious in dealing with the public and learnt that the majority of crime is perpatrated by a few.
The police is an institution and if you haven't got much warmth , compassion and kindness in your heart you'll fit in lovely.
Remember a training sergeant telling a whole group of new recruits that this is the most insestous job you will ever have .

Didnt we already have a trust the police thread?

No, I don't trust them. Ive got 2 in the family and they openly admit to corruption. From letting other coppers off with criminal offenses to acting criminally day to day on the beat. I don't believe there is a single copper out there who is 100% straight.

As mentioned above the only reason I would ring the police is if i needed a crime reference number for insurance purposes.

I've met (no pun intended) and dealt with some great coppers and also unfortunately some not so good ones . It's a bit of an inconsistent experience I'd say

I have 2 coppers living opposite, one is an inspector for South Yorkshire Police (Hillsborough etc) and she works for the child protection department. He is the biggest liar known to man and she beats her kids. So do I trust them.......not a chance

Most Police I trust these days but in general I don't like them.
