Disheartening day for black coaches

The sackings of Chris Powell and Chris Ramsey were "disheartening", says anti-racism campaigner Troy Townsend.

Powell departed Huddersfield and Ramsey left QPR to leave four bosses of black and minority ethnic (BME) and Asian backgrounds in the top four leagues.

"To lose both managers sends out a really strong message to those aspiring to get on this journey," said Townsend.

But former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair disagreed and called Townsend's claims "damaging".

Last week the Football Association's newly appointed BME boss Wayne Allison said he wanted to increase the number of black coaches.
But the sackings of both Powell and Ramsey within the space of a few hours on Tuesday left numbers at a low and could discourage black coaches, according to Townsend.

"People will look and think 'Is it worth it? Is it because of the colour of their skin? Or is it because they are bad managers?," Townsend told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I know people will say results are not right but there is a lot more to it than that.

"Today is disheartening without a doubt."

They had shit results and they got sacked. Is there any need for the race card to come in to play.

I'm glad sinclair came out and disagreed with this bollocks.

Ramsey was sacked by a black man and their chairman is hardly a white skin head is he.
Maybe a better thought out statement was needed.... Plenty of crap white managers have been sacked very recently haven't they ?...... If your crap your crap colour don't come into it.
Guess the high horse brigade will put me right.... To that I say don't bother I won't be debating it.

Spot on Dog, I don't see anything in what you said to disagree with you are right. :35:

Agreed Dog, Townsend is trying to twist it to an agenda.
What a surprise.

The only message it sends out is if you're not that good at your job, you'll get sacked.

People coming out and saying things like this probably does more damage with regards to black candidates getting managerial jobs than anything else. People constantly playing the race card when it isn't a race issue is getting tedious.

Well said dog/SG - it's so disheartening and exasperating to see these trite justifications rolled out yet again.

Football management is in some respects the ultimate performance related job - so it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that if you don't get the performances you need you don't stay in the job.

by all means kick up a fuss about lack of black managers in the game but don't attack the chairmen brave enough to give them a chance in the first place. Utterly daft. Can see where Andros gets his brains from!

It's a dim witted viewpoint.

Much like the one that says women are discrimination aged against which leads to positive discrimination on things like political party, and other national body selection lists.

I do agree that it is a disheartening day for black coaches, but in the sense that it now means there's even fewer black and minority ethnic managers in the game. It is an issue that needs to be tackled, however simply accusing chairmen of being racist every time a poorly performing manager is sacked is just ridiculous.

If only being rubbish genuinely was 'disheartening'. Most of the rubbish people I know have supreme confidence...

(Note: Tongue in cheek. I like Ramsey and would have him back here as a coach, but good luck to him in management.)

Without checking all the facts, I'd say that the managerial generation (let's simplify and say 45-60) played in an era when the English leagues were predominantly filled by white, English players? I'd also guess that more retiring white players go on to take their coaching badges than retiring black players during that period?

Surely the logical conclusion from my entirely fabricated facts would be that there are a lot more white managers around than black ones? Therefore the spread is going to be heavily stacked in the favour of white managers?

With the top flights getting more nationality diverse, the number of English players dwindling then surely the number of English managers (and in this case, black English managers) will continue to be low?

You can't just employ people for the sake of fulfilling a quota when they are not the best candidates for the job. Positive discrimination is not the way forward

Just heard Jimmy Floyd on talksport.... Said he did not agree with Townsends view at all.
Said managers are judged on results as far as he's concerned.
He spoke very well and made a lot of sense.... I think he will be a prem manager in the near future.

I'm sick of the racism thing.

Powell and Ramsey deserved the sack for results this year and last, there is nothing more to it than that.

Ince, Curle and Barnes are always claiming they are being discriminated against, no - you are just terrible managers.

There are no woman managers, are the 92 league chairman sexist as well?

Football is a results business, whatever race, if you are not performing then you are gone. Tim sherwood got sacked quickly for the same reasons. Some people just have the race card in there pocket ready and waiting.

Kit Symons just been sacked.... Was it because results have been poor or that he came into work wearing a Bob Marley set up.... I think I know the which its was.

Bob Marley getup shouldn't be used as a reason .... hehehehe

Bob Marley is one of my all time fave musicians mate...... Don't know why I used his name in vain.
But guess you got where I was coming from.
