Derby County

Championship club Derby County have been fined £100,000 over some of their accounting policies.

However, the English Football League has the option to appeal against the verdict and may call for a points deduction - which could see the Rams relegated from the Championship.
The EFL said in a statement on Wednesday that, pending any appeal, it had developed an interchangeable fixture list for next season for Derby and Wycombe Wanderers, while the disciplinary process is finalised.

The Rams were cleared of breaching Financial Fair Play rules last year.

However, the EFL appealed against the decision to an independent tribunal and won the element of the case concerning how the club measured the value of players - called amortisation.

On Wednesday, the EFL said Derby had been fined and also issued with a reprimand as to their future conduct.

The club has also been ordered to file restated accounts for financial years ending 30 June 2016, 2017 and 2018 "together with updated profit and sustainability calculations if necessary," the EFL said.

The inconsistency and timing of all of these different punishments just show how unfit for purpose the EFL are.

This has been going on for years / months and they somehow managed to take so long that they now put Wycombe and Derby in a position where they can't even properly prepare for a new season with all this uncertainty around them.

If you are accused of breaking the rules during a season they should have a deadline that the investigation, decision and appeal process must all be done by the end of that season so punishments are applied to the year any cheating took place. I also think automatic relegation rather than points deduction for deliberate FFP breaches would make sense as if you broke FFP to buy a team you otherwise shouldn't be able to have - the team may be good enough to offset the points penalty in extra points they get and then there is no real punishment.

Our owner screwed the club over and we got the book thrown at us immediately but Sheff Wed and Derby's owners were deemed to have deliberately tried to cheat for the clubs benefit and they got delays in their punishment and lesser punishments. It's not balanced.

Our punishment has nothing to do with FFP. We were placed into administration which comes with it an automatic 12 point deduction. That's been the rule for years and everyone knows it. The problem is that the EFL have yet to establish a clear punishment for breaches of FFP, which leads to situations like this.

Exactly, they had years to define the punishment but they didn't bother.

The fact that this was announced at 11pm shows just what the EFL are all about!Which organisation would time it like that unless they hoped to go below the radar? They know full well that Rooney's Derby won't publish their previous accounts before the season starts!Another copout

An utter farce from the efl, they really aren’t fit to govern. How can Wycombe prepare for the season not knowing what standard of player to recruit - or what salary they can negotiate? As a club Derby is struggling and the owner is desperately trying to sell. How does this uncertainty help that, are they trying to force them into administration or something? There needs to be a cut off for when deductions are applied and they need to speed up these panels. They arranged ours in record time but everyone else’s cases they let drag on.

I agree
Both rules need re-addressing - the admin rule was brought in to stop clubs like Leicester who went in to administration as a deliberate tactic to clear their debts & then just started to spend again (as did some other clubs). It wasn't designed to cover a scenario like Latics under Choi & Au Yeung. But because of the prior incidents with other clubs the admin rule & punishment is very clear so Latics got the prescribed punishment
Breaching FFP in the way that Derby & Sheff Wed did is much more difficult to prove hence why the cases take longer to investigate & why the punishments are more wide ranging as there are different breaches all under the umbrella of FFP

I don't think they've considered or care for any impact it may have on Wycombe. I assume most players that have stayed will have taken relegation pay cuts. They'll expect some kind of backdated pay from the club who have also likely planned their finances, ticket prices, negotiated sponsorship deals, sold and released players all based on being a league 1 club. They think they're punishing Derby, but uncertainty also shoves the knife deep in to Wycombe. They'll completely screw over 2 more clubs and rub their hands together on a job well done

The greatest irony for me is that these rules were put in place to prevent clubs from going into administration / folding, whilst the punishments they impose are hideously counterproductive. Derby are struggling already with the owner unwilling to put in any more money than absolutely necessary, whilst looking to sell. What will fining them achieve if not pushing them closer to the edge of administration / bankruptcy? Relegation would enable them to cut their costs drastically, since they could release / sell players on big wages and put together a team for L1 level which would cost far less. I appreciate that you could say that it's debts fault for breaking FFP rules, but pushing them closer to the abyss is punishing staff, players and fans, not the owners who actually broke the rules, and are likely to be gone before long anyway.

Wycombe, who have done nothing wrong at all, now have no idea what league they'll be in next year, meaning budgeting will be nigh impossible for them, and they have no clue what standard of players they need to be targeting, how much they can pay them, or even what the club's income will be. All will and good wrong they can wait, but they can and will miss a lot of opportunities to sign players that maybe they want to sign for whatever level they're playing at. So they're defacto being punished as well, despite there being no suggestion of any wrongdoing on their part.

EFL is an absolute shambles.

Football contracts run until the end of June, no player would have lost any money until next week.

The problem with all of this is that the wrong people get punished for the misdoings of some unscrupulous owner or directors.

The people that suffer most are the fans and players of any team charged with an offence by the EFL. They are, in the most, innocent but yet are always the ones that have to pick up the pieces and have their dreams shattered.

It is about time that sanctions were placed upon the owners of the clubs and not the clubs themselves. If for instance large fines and bans were given directly to the owners, maybe they would think twice before trying it on. Why is it necessary to deduct points and fine clubs thus punishing the player or fans when they have no control over the way the club is funded or its wage policies.

Our plight was a case in point. I seriously doubt that either Choi or Au Yeung have suffered from the administration and yet the whole club was ripped apart, players sold for a pittance forcing them to uproot and move their families. Staff made redundant losing their livelihoods and putting them into financial hardship and the fans themselves who invest much of their lives into the club were deprived of seeing, what was looking like a very good team that had been assembled, possibly progress to a higher league.

I seriously believe the rules need to be changed to prevent other owners inflicting the same onto other unsuspecting clubs whilst the EFL stand by and say that they simply followed the rules.

The rules were meant to protect the integrity of the football clubs not their unscrupulous owners.

If I were Derby fan, I'd take the relegation and rebuild now, rather than waste a season in the Championship that will see them relegated anyway if they get a points deduction just like it did Sheff Wed. It'll simply put them in a far worse position a year from now.

They should be happy to join L1 it's got more ex premier league big clubs in it than the championship 😂

SHOCK, HORROR!!!
Derby will play in the Championship next season after the English Football League decided not to appeal against a decision to just fine the club for their accounting policies.

The Rams were fined £100,000 and ordered to resubmit their accounts by an EFL disciplinary commission.
The EFL could have appealed against the verdict and demanded a points deduction - which would have brought relegation.

But the EFL believed it had no realistic chance of winning any appeal.

Why does it not surprise us....EFL, corrupt to the core, from dodgy Parry all the way down. Football associations...PL / EFL / UEFA....they ALL piss in the same pot whilst taking out as much as they can to feather their own nests....on a par with politicians.

The fact that Derby have been caught deliberately trying to dodge FFP to gain an unfair advantage and stayed up by a single point and they pretty much get a slap on the wrist compared to Sheff Wed, Birmingham and ourselves just shows how unfit for purposes and inconsistent the EFL and their rules are.

If you get an automatic points deduction for your owner screwing us to the clubs detriment how can you not get an automatic points deduction for your owner deliberately cheating to gain an unfair advantage for his club?
