I’ve not read this either
Wrexham completed the double over the Blades as they once again came from behind against United to turn the game around and keep their playoff hopes alive. The home side have now only won 1 in the last 5 home league games and their recent form has been of a side heading down the league, rather than upwards. The Blades have now lost 19 league games; with only their woeful city rivals Wednesday have lost more. Whilst United will probably stay up, this has been a desperately disappointing season for the Blades. In terms of today, United should have won the game as they led thanks to Andre Brooks but missed chances and awful defending saw yet another 2nd half fadeout. Goals from Josh Windass and Sam Smith completed a turnaround for the Welsh side, who showed the clinical play and ruthlessness, sadly lacking from a brittle Blades side. There is clearly a lot of work to do for the coaching staff in terms of the personnel, tactical awareness and fitness if United are going to make a better fist of things next time out.
Wilder made two changes with Hoever in for the suspended Seriki and Hamer back in, with Ings dropping to the bench. Wrexham were missing former Blade Kieffer Moore thought injury, as they looked to bounce back from a defeat in the week at Watford, to get their playoff push back on track.
The game began with both teams moving the ball around crisply, in bright sunshine but the Blades were having more of the play and started to dictate things. Peck and Riedewald were controlling midfield and Hamer and O’Hare were busy. A shot by O’Hare was blocked but then after a swift move, Hyam’s slip saw Bamford free but he sliced his attempted chip wide, when he should have found the net. A good move down the right saw Brooks and then O’Hare combine, but Burrows with his right foot passed it a few yards the wrong side of the post.
Wrexham had not offered much attacking wide but a Windass turn and shot, had to be saved from Davies low down – in the first save of the game. Their best chance came soon after as a cross was met by O’Brien but his header glanced wide when he should have hit the target. Hamer did have the ball in the net with a headed finish from close range from a Riedewald cross but the flag had gone up after the midfielder strayed into an offside position.
United continued to push and O’Hare and Burrows had efforts saved by Okonkwo as the home side continued to be the dominant force but they could not find the goal, that their good play has merited.
The second half began with the game opening up and after Windass had a goal disallowed for offside, Hamer played a smart one two before curling an effort wide. The opening game did come soon after. Brooks was denied by the keeper with a toe poked finish, but on the next attack he was able to beat the keeper. The ball was played across and Bamford’s effort was only parried by the keeper, who tried to deny BROOKS on the loose ball but the finish had too much power and United were deservedly ahead.
The Blades lead only lasted 6 minutes. It came from a simplistic route. The ball was played down the left side and Smith was allowed too much time to centre and WINDASS was on the spot to slide a finish under Davies. It was poor defending with neither centre back covering themselves in glory. Davies, Arblaster and Ogbene came on for Riedewald, Peck and Hoever as once again United players were struggling to finish games. United now were not offering much of an attacking threat with Bamford being physically held up from the Wrexham defence and others running out of gas. If anything, it looked like the visitors were finishing the stronger and so it proved. Kabore was allowed to come inside without a challenge or pressure on the cross. Once the ball came over, SMITH met it and guided it down and in, with Tanganga and Ogbene both completely static. Another basic goal to concede from the hapless home defence.
Chong came on for Burrows and won two corners with enterprising runs but a Davies effort that curled over the bar, was the closest United game and the four minutes of stoppage time was seen out with relative ease by Wrexham – who celebrated with their fans at full time – continuing their unlikely quest for four promotions in a row.
