Has just resigned as Donny's manager. He apparently had a meeting with the board and decided he couldn't continue!

According to a local paper, The Star, there was some sort of rift over the playing budget. Ferguson doesn't consider himself a L1 manager apparently. He leaves the club following a 32-month and 145 match stay in which Rovers won 58 matches, drew 35 and lost 52 - nothing special about that - was it the playing budget or the manager's ability?

I would’ve thought they’d have a reasonable budget given their attendances and promotion the season before. I’m pretty sure they started the season with Paul Dickov in charge though? When did he go? If Darren was specifically promised a certain level of funds when he joined only for that to be proven bullshit then you can’t blame him.

Simon Jordan was on Talk Sport last night when the news broke and his comment was that the language being used was a clear translation of "huge difference in opinions as to the level of resources needed to achieve the targets" and that Ferguson was correct to walk away now than to stay and prove himself right..

Yep cant blame him if he's been promised funds and they dont materialise. He wont want to tarnish his managerial record. Barely anyone looks at what resources are used to achieve results these days. With the managerial merrygo round as it is, I'm sure he'll be back in work a couple of months into the season at a club challenging for promotion.

We don't know if he was promised funds or it was wishful thinking on Ferguson's part but, if he's ambitious, then he's right to go. In hindsight, I think he would have succeeded at Rangers but that's pure conjecture on my part. At our level, it's not just resources as evidenced by the respective successes of Shrewsbury and Accrington last season and how well we did. I was in Doncaster on Friday before ending up in Leeds on Saturday and the town was buzzing - a race meeting the next day. The first guys I spoke to were Coventry supporters [visitors] looking forward to next season. The next couple that got chatting to me were on a first and last date as it happened but I got left with the bloke. Then I spoke to a couple of locals - one was a Scunthorpe supporter and the other a Leeds fan, a bit like talking to people in Medway, I guess.

Doesn't really sound like they've gone back on a promise of funds. Sounds more like they've told him they want (for example) a promotion challenge, and they've got a budget of £X, he's told them there's no chance they'll challenge on that budget, and he needs more.

If that is the case, can't really blame him, if he doesn't think he can achieve the target with the budget available, chances are he'd be getting sacked soon anyway when the board decides he's underachieving based on their targets.

Wouldn't mind betting he has another job lined up and used this as an excuse to leave

Exactly my thoughts Phil.

Given that lower league managers are not on a fortune, it would be a brave man to go home and tell his missus that he's just quit his job because the players budget wasn't large enough.

He's been tapped up somewhere along the line.
