Dan Burn v Harry Maguire

TRUE BELIEVER

Vital Football Hero
Only two years ago Harry Maguire was playing for Wigan, it made me wonder what the future holds for our new central defensive star. Could we be seeing a new star rising? Thoughts please.

Dan Burn has done better for Latics than what Harry did. I couldn't believe it when Harry was selected for the squad. I definitely thought England must be scraping the barrel slightly. ( I don't watch MOTD or live Sky games). Therefore only basing my thoughts on what I remembered of him, which wasn't England class. The lad has done fantastic though but he hasn't been pitted against much class yet. Hope he can continue in that vein has Croatia may be an harder game but Belgium/France will definitely be.

How old was McGuire when at Wigan? Surely Burn is a few years older at least than McGuire was that’ll explain the difference.

I actually thought Maguire was a stand out performer in what was an unbelievably awful Wigan side. It was clear he was highly valued by the fact we didn't even attempt (or Hull didn't entertain), a permanent transfer offer. I can't see Burn following such a grandiose path, but that's not to say he won't make a solid premier league player one day

A clear difference is that maguire has an ability to pass a ball with comfort and bring it out of defence. Sadly we all saw the efforts of Dan when calamity Caldwell asked him to do this. As above maguire was a shining light in a sea of shit for us with an excellent attitude and he deserves all the accolades coming his way. To be fair Dan improved remarkably when just asked to defend and was a standout performer too in another horrendous team. Hopefully we get him to sign a new contract.

Harry Maguire is one of the best footballers we have had at the club in the last 5 years. He was the stand out man in our relegation season (didn't he join in January?) - He played with so much maturity and confidence for his age and stood out head and shoulders from the rest. Dan Burn, I do like him but come on they are not in the same league. Dan Burn I think is a good defender but has that mistake in him and I don't always feel 100% comfortable with him on the ball. For us, a lower end Championship club he fits in and is probably one of our better players, but there is no comparison.

I agree with the points being made about the differing abilities with the ball at their feet Harry is far more confident in that respect. Which probably comes from being a midfielder in his early years, however I do think Dan is improving in this respect as he has shown when he has galloped forward in a couple of games last season. I think the test will be this season when he comes up against better quality strikers consistently, however I personally believe he will surprise a few people.

No insult intended Will, the maths bit was tongue in cheek. However I recognise what you were saying and agree that he would have had more time to develop. But you did leave yourself open to a bit of a ribbing.:cheers:

I thought Maguire looked like a player who'd go on to be a top Premier League player when he was with us, I'm not suprised in the least to see him doing so well now. The issue was he was in a hopless team under hopeless managers. If we'd have stayed up that season I'd have pushed the boat out as far as we could to try and sign him permanently safe in the knowledge we'd make a huge profit on his later sale. Unfortunately for us we did go down and he has gone from strength to strength.

I love Dan Burn and I also think he will be a Premier League player in the future, but i think Maguire looked the better / had more potential of the two during his spell with us. I'd also confidently put Morsy in that same category of Prem League player in waiting - out of the rest of the squad there are a few that have a chance but I'm not 100% convinced on anyone else.

It was there to see when he played for us , different class .. Burn is a good centre half but not England quality .. we will see this season as he will be up against some good strikers .. hope he has as good a season as last ..
