Dack on the Move?

Well here we go again - another transfer window opens and surprising we still have our "star" asset.

Will he go this time and if so for how much?

I feel the big money transfer and the chance of joining a top Championship or Premiership side has long gone.

At the moment I dont think he will attract much interest as his form has been erratic and he excuse has been recovering from a injury which has been going on for far to long.

Maybe a championship side will take a punt on him and we can get a good sell on clause.

He is probably one of the better paid players so him going will free up some of the budget - or do we hang on to him and hope his form / injury recovers?

With only 18 months left on his contract and his current situation with form and injury, we are only likely to receive modest bids in January, if any at all.

His value to us should he become fitter and regain his form is much higher so I think and hope we will hold on to him until the summer.

I can't see any serious offers as he hasn't been anywhere near as effective this season. A better second half and leave in summer seems most likely/hopeful outcome for all parties

Completely agree with Durham about the injury thing going on for far too long. Personally I think he lacks focus in the long run and that's why we got him in the first place. I said a similar thing last season after the Barnsley game when he was frankly awful.

And in the 2016 January transfer window I couldn't believe some of the figures being talked about. Bet Scally wishes he'd taken the Brizzle one.

Think we'd do better to offload him for around the 20k he's probably worth now and use the freed up wages elsewhere.

Sorry folks but that's my view.

Can't see any point in doing that. Any player we sign is a lottery as to whether they work or not. Why risk another O'Hara?

Sign him up give him an out clause that is realistic put him on 3 years with extra 2 at our discretion not his.

Players need to realise job security in this game is at an all time low especially in the lower divisions.

Contracts should be heavily weighted to league position and final position at end of season. Not on the pitch or bench unless its injury should also cost players dearly.

The counter side to that is when they are doing well they need to wage packets that reflect that.

Football is a nice life but it can be cruel in ways that few of u will ever know.

Firstly, I'd dispute Durham's suggestion that Dack is one of the highest paid players.
He signed a progressive five year contract, the same as young Hess.
Unless he has negotiated a new one, which I doubt,, he will not be on the same as Cody, Wagstaff etc.

Secondly, given his form this season so far, he has little value at the moment and will attract little attention in January.

Thirdly, the best thing that the club could do is sign him up on another long term deal with an agreed buy out clause. His incentive will then be to get back to top form and get the 'dream move'
He is a class player and the best that Gills have produced for many years.
To allow him to go on the cheap or let him become a free agent would be ridiculous.

Skullduggery is well off the mark, saying that he lacks focus. If anything, he is trying too hard and not playing his normal game.
I thought his last game against Peterborough was excellent.
If/when he regains his good form, the league had better watch out.
I think we'll have a pretty good second half of the season if our luck with injuries holds.

So we get rid of Dacky, what's to say that any replacements will be any better. Edinburgh doesn't appear to have an eye for a decent prospect like Pulis (SBT, Asaba et al) or even Hess.
I'd keep Dack in the hope that he comes good (no pun intended).

Look at it from a buyer's point of view. Dack could be a canny buy for a championship manager, who knows his game and how to use him. A few hundred thousand is a low fee atr that level and Dack remains a talented player. A new challenge, a manger with ideas about how to use him and playing alongside better players ...

He might well not attract any offers at all but I'd not be over surprised if someone like Warnock tried a cheeky bid.

Actually Shotshy, you're kind of backing me up there. Rushing around like a blue arsed fly isn't the way to do it. And that's what he did at Barnsley last season (noteable because he wasn't doing it in other games around that period) and at lots of other games in 2016.

In my opinion, he can't focus on what he's good at and as such is somewhat of a liability. I was at the Barnsley game (and others since) with someone who completed a coaching course and they couldn't/can't understand all the fuss about him.

Don't see the point in keeping him. Better to take the chance.

Dack is worth more than a few hundred thousand to us: whilst he seems to have gone off the boil this season the potential is still there. If Egan was valued at 400K + add ons, Dack has to be worth more.
The best move would be to offer him a new contract with a release clause.

Not sure that Pulis was any better at spotting a decent prospect than JED.

SBT and Asaba were already well established players that any third division manager would have loved to have. A combined price tag of 1.1M something I suspect JED can only dream of (along with any manager since Pulis). More credit perhaps owed for signing Akinbiyi but he himself cost 250k and would have been a highly sought after player at our level.

What Pulis was much (much much) better at was having any player fit into a well drilled system and shining. This is JED's big problem - he can't get the best out of the players he signs. Look how many have gone backwards since arriving (Oshilaja, Ehmer, Jackson, Osadebe, Donnelly, Wright, Garmston).

No need to apologise. I found your suggestion rather amusing.

What should we spend the 20K on?

One other crucial difference is that in Pulis's day we actually had the money to prize away sought after players that the other club were reluctant to sell. Those players could also be attracted by the terms we were offering. In the case of SBT, Barry Ashby and Paul Smith, plus Asaba (although he was originally sold to Reading) the impression I had was that Brentford were a selling club which could not retain them if their valuation was matched. That has certainly changed now as the Egan situation proved.

Correct me if I am wrong but of the players you mention, I think Osadebe, Donnelly and Wright had all been released by their former clubs (or academy in the case of Osadebe) and were looking for clubs when we signed them after trials.

Ehmer and Garmston were also released by QPR and WBA respectively but I don't know whether other clubs were in competition for their signatures.

Jackson had only played league two football when we signed him so I don't think he would be aware that he has gone backwards.

You could have a point with Oshilaja though. I am not sure why but even at the start of the season he seemed to lack the bravery and confidence that he showed in his loan spell last year. Probably needs the arm around the shoulder and JED may not be the best for that.

I think we are half in agreement GBN.

I give JED credit for picking up decent players that wouldn't have been on many wanted lists.

Of course Jackson is currently playing at the highest level in his career. Where he's gone backwards is that Dack and Egan aside, he was our best player for the first three or four months of last season but is now a shadow of the same player. He was good defensively and excellent going forward. Now he's awful defensively and seemingly not allowed to go forward.

Agreed, nibbles. I think this may be the reason why a lot of posters believe we have a team capable of promotion, even though I am not aware that JED has spent a penny on transfer fees, but that the players are underperforming.

JED seems to inspire and coach new players to display their best form early on in their spell with us before they have a dip. That is true of Jackson, as you say, but Deji and Osadebe are other examples.

I just have a feeling that it is a confidence thing. There is no need to pump them up when we are having a run like the start of last season but as soon as the doubts creep in some players seem to retreat in to their shell. Hopefully, the gradual upturn in form can reignite them.

Skullduggery "I was at the Barnsley game (and others since) with someone who completed a coaching course and they couldn't/can't understand all the fuss about him."

Then he was voted player of the year for the whole division and made it into the full Football League team.

You and your mate seem to be the only ones who know what they are talking about. Everyone else has obviously totally misjudged him, including me.

Best player we've had since Jarvis, if not even better.

Jury still out on how much he will recover from his injuries, but even in his present form, 20k, are you having a laugh?l

Nibbles, I don't quite agree that Pulis was good at getting the best out of players. In the season we missed out in the play offs, he had a fully fit Taylor and Asaba to call on and yet we played some incredibly negative games, away from home in particular and, as a result, we didn't get the best out of them. A dreadfully dull nil nil draw at Reading comes to mind. Peter Taylor produced a far more attacking formation with basically the same players and but for Bob Taylor leaving half way through the season, we would surely have been promoted automatically rather than through the playoffs. However, in fairness, Pulis's strength was not in creating attacking sides but defensive ones as he continues to do now.

Agree with nibbles that SBT and Asaba were established players hence their price tags.

Also agree that offering Dack a new long term deal with a realistic release fee is the answer for both parties. I can't see him signing it though. He knows he will get plenty of offers as a free agent. Thankfully we have a few years before that becomes an issue.
