Current Squad: June 2021

Time to let the dust settle before another handful of contracted players leave via a number of possible exit routes. It would be great if out of the half dozen or so that faded into the background, at least one, maybe two could re-invent themselves with an impressive pre season.

Maybe wishful thinking but Jones and Elbouzedi have shown tantalising flashes. If MAPP could only join the dots to draw out some more consistency and iron out the deficiencies that he sees in their games.

Of that list, I make it around 12 that would currently be contenders for a spot in the starting 11; provided we don't sell any of them. There's probably another couple of stocking fillers amongst them.

Rumours of a slightly bigger budget (definitely needed as called for by MA), players to move on, new loan signings to be brokered and players to be enticed after we didn't get over the line.

It's going to be a refreshed and exciting look to the new season with the core of a young squad that should be that bit older and wiser after their marathon efforts this time around.

Looking at the latest squad, we definitely need some goal threat from attackers and wingers because the goals from Jorge, Brennan and Rogers will take some making up.

Totally agree, add to that the loss of TJ defensively, some work to do yet to get up to last years standard.

Beginning to look quite good. If anyone had any worries about Jorge leaving we now have a DM/CM triangle of options with Bridcutt, Fiorini and Sanders, plus of course McGrandles or Tayo can play there if Bramall plays LB. Striker options looking better as well - options of experience with Hopper and Maguire and highly rated youth with Scully and Nlundulu. Minimum of GK and maybe left winger, or another striker in the Brennan mould.Can’t help thinking we need another CB with Walsh & Jackson’s injury record - maybe a promising young prospect on loan or permanent to step in and take their place if needs be. Lewis has a season’s experience now so should be that much better. Any more will be icing on the cake I reckon, but at least we have the basis of a good first team now to start with.
 
I'm guessing the 3 youngsters will go out on loan?
Melbourne and Elbouzedi will leave?
16 on the books providing Scully and Walsh stay, a few spaces up for grabs then!
 
We have 3 in to replace,

Goalkeeper (plus possibly Sam on loan)
Defender (plus Max)
Midfielder
2 wingers/forwards (plus Zac)
1 forward

I make that 3 in to replace up to 8 departures so we have a way to go yet before the squad is finalised. Of course that presumes that none of the first and second year pros are going to step up as regulars in the match day squad.
 
Up front certainly looking ok now, with Draper 'in the wings'. Wingers and midfield a little light and a gk obviously needed.
 
Melbourne and Elbouzedi are clearly on their way out, so that effectively reduces the squad from 23 to 21.

The plan was for Makama to go to Gainsborough on loan, and I can't see the other three young pros (Long, Roughan and Cann) featuring a great deal for the first team this season. That reduces the usable squad to 17 players including no goalkeeper.

We still need a replacement for Grant, unless Fiorini can fill that space. I am not convinced that Sanders can do that yet.

So there is still a lot to be done before the window closes on 31 August.
