Speaking ahead of his side's first Premier League game at Wembley, against Chelsea on Sunday, he said: "We need to push Tottenham.

"We need a big trophy. A big trophy is the Premier League or Champions League.

"Because, if not, we prepare the team to win the FA Cup or League Cup and you are in the middle of the table, or sixth, or seventh. I would be disappointed.

"It would mean nothing for me to win the League Cup or the FA Cup, even though they are important.

"For me, the principal reason I am here is to try to challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League."

Spurs have not won a trophy since landing the 2008 League Cup, and Pochettino said: "For me, we need to put Tottenham every season with the possibility to win the Premier League and to win the Champions League, the two most important trophies.

"If one day, I am not capable to win the Premier League here with Tottenham, or we don't have the chance to win the Premier League, I think it will be very disappointing."

I like that he is ambitious but not the best way to say it.

I bet he would love to win a FA Cup or League Cup. A trophy is a trophy they all count.

I'm in tune with his ambition:

"For me, the principal reason I am here is to try to challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League."

I'd focus everything we can on those competitions and still wouldn't use our top players for the cups until we were in the latter stages.

We need to win a big trophy asap. Smaller cups are fine but we really need to show the world that we are a force and the only way to do that is winning a big trophy.

"If one day, I am not capable to win the Premier League here with Tottenham, or we don't have the chance to win the Premier League, I think it will be very disappointing."

Well my friend, you have never been capable of that for a nano-second, so I am not sure where a day comes into it.

Perhaps some of what he says is 'lost in translation', but the bloke is a total muppet who talks a lot of pseudo clever stuff designed to take the gullible in.

We all know that the PL and CL are where the money and kudos is now, but the FA Cup used to mean a lot to us given that we held the record for winning it for a number of years. What he says shows a total lack of understanding for our heritage .

Or he gets that the world has moved on.

Someone once said to me, some time ago, that Europe was so stuck in its traditions that it couldn't progress.

Now I believe that has changed in general but the cups are fading into obscurity. Other than offering a European spot they really aren't all that. They're a hold out of days gone by.

That said, I'd still like us to win a few.

The FA and League cups provide entry into the Europa cup, the winners of which get CL the following season. Also 5th place in the PL gives the same reward.

This season I am being pessimistic although we will see how it pans out. The cups or 5 th could be more important not only this season but next if we have settling in problems.

The cups are also important for youngsters and squad players to get their chances.

The PL and CL are the ultimate goals of course and we are nearer to winning the former at the moment it seems.

I would take all the cups very seriously this season. The players have intimated they want a cup and I don't blame them, the fans desperately do and it would soften the Wembley issue if we did win one.

You are right on that 80, much as it pains me as I value the FA Cup.

When we are old old and grey looking back over what our club has achieved, I am going to get a lot more satisfaction and pride to know we won 10 or 12 (hopefully) FA Cups than to know played in the CL for 10 or 12 seasons.

I still like glory.

I still like trophies. 1st. Nothing else matters.

I agree but I feel that he reached the conclusion a bit late.

2 years ago we were in a title race with Leicester, we went all in for the EL and FA, which left our players fatigued and injured, and only then we tanked the EL vs Dortmund. I remember vividly most posters here banging about us being able to push on all fronts, something which occurred again last season

PL and CL are all that matter these days, and those are the only cups which would satisfy me. Until we have the financial power to pay 120k a week to our subs, FA and League cup should be tanked.

Doesn't help when Poch doesn't like using his squad. Plenty of games last season Vorm, Wimmer, Sissoko, N'Kou and Janssen could have had more game time. He doesn't trust his squad that has been an issue since his arrival.

The ONLY thing a top manager is judged on is the silverware he's got to back him up, I've listened to many and varied journo's on the Sunday Supp saying for the last 2 seasons that the top clubs won't be interested in Poch until he proves he can win something.

Poch is clearly an idiot if he thinks his 1st ever trophy will be the PL or CL with Spurs, unless he's got a 95 year contract.

A serial winner like Jose always targets the first domestic trophy available to win in this country, the LC, he's won it twice with 2 different clubs, he's a winner though, I'm afraid Poch will always be a loser.

Jose spent 300 million pounds in 2 summer windows and all he has to show for is a LC and the EL, and that's before we even consider wages.
For that money he gets measured by a whole different standard to Poch, anything short of CL and PL titles is a failure. Any ManU fan who claims otherwise is kidding himself.

Judge Jose on his career, not a snapshot of your choosing, he's a career serial winner and you know it.

He started his winning career at Porto, he won the Europa with Porto, and then the CL with Porto, not a European giant with limitless funds at the time.

Explain that.

I think that what Jose did at Porto is nothing short of genius, and since no other manager in world football has come close to emulating that, not even Jose himself.

You're the one who pointed at the LC, hence you were referring to ManU and Chelsea, so you chose the time frame - not me. I'll just point out, again, that both clubs had massive funds for transfers and wages, so comparing us to them (and Poch to Jose in that sense) is meaningless, as their owners measure success differently.
