Critics

Was watching something earlier and they had food critics on. ??? Surely food is a matter of taste. One mans food is another mans poison as they say. An example is, JF does'nt like cheese, me I love it. He likes curry, I cant even stand the smell of it. But it set me thinking, Film critics, WTF we all like different films. Some like action, some murder mystery some romance etc. TV crics is another one. These people make a very good living out of telling us what we should like or dislike. Why. So the question is in the poll. Feel free to add your own.

Yeah, difficult one, they can be very pompous as well.

It's like music reviews. If an album of a band i like is reviewed by a fan, I'd probably listen to the review more (you can compare with other albums etc) but how do you know if the person who is reviewing it is even into that sort of music?

Meh!

Not worth what they get paid but that's probably unfair on the less lucky ones who don't get the big bucks and the juncket trips.

But some are useful when you find those who at least share your idea of good, bad, cringeworthy.

But people who live and die by a critic need to learn to find their own opinion.

Critics can certainly be thought-provoking, but in the modern day, they are beyond parody.

In terms of food critics, for instance, the likes of the late AA Gill and Jay Rayner can't be take seriously - their celebrity is founded in how cutting and downright abusive they can be - it sells papers/get clicks.

More thoughtful and considered critics (Mark Kermode in movies, for example) are worth reading, for perhaps a different and dispassionate point of view.

Agree with Mike though, if anyone bases their decisions on critics' opinions.... :2: :3:

Must admit JPA was thinking of Kermode when typing. He has a way about him of even making a film worth a watch even if clearly he couldn't stand it....but he appreciates others would like that quirk or whatever.

I like Jonathan Ross, but I can't stand him as a critic as he's so into what he's into nothing else got a fair chance kind of thing.

Critics are good if they can be objective and keep to the apreciative of quality regardless of personal taste attitude. When they are being suibjective they are not much use.

Barry Norman was excellent for films, Tommy Vance was great for rock music.

All this reallt proves is that I'm getting old. lol

Vance name rings a bell but no idea why.

Being my age and not an old fart like you Northy Norman was on his way out when I got into films so I know him, but never really saw enough of him to judge.

Some music critics gave David Bowies Blackstar a tepid review, when he died a few days later they saw the album in a whole new light and were waxing over it by the page...

Brilliant and Outstanding said the same wankers....

When it comes to movies, I do use Rotten Tomatoes as it's a review aggregator so gives movies ratings based on many different reviews.

You have a far better chance of avoiding wasting 2 hours of your time on some turkey that got a 20% rating if you use Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, people are always going to like different things, but overall I think it's a great rating system.

Music reviews are subjective and I wouldn't bother with them. The most pointless reviews are from people that don't even like or know anything about the genre of music they're reviewing. Why would someone review a metal album if they're not even into metal? I've seen it done before, just stupid.

Food critics are just pretentious wankers.

I do often think the only people to review movies, hotels/motels are angry people and rivals...

I think people who go and have a half decent time don't bother to tell the world.
