Cricket : Sri Lanka v England tour Jan 2021

Day Three continued...

Update 5 - Close of play: England 339-9. Root run out for 186, by some smart fielding at short leg. He had batted all day, and made very few mistakes. For Sri Lanka, spinner Embuldeniya has taken 7 wickets in the innings so far, and Thirimanne has taken 5 catches in the slips.

... but not before he had scored 186 and batted all day! :balloon:

He is now Yorkshire's highest Test Match run scorer, and from the other counties only Gooch, Stewart and Cook are ahead of him. He is not far behind the first two, but still quite a way behind Cook. He has a good chance of moving up to second over next few months.

Day Four

Lunch - England 344 all out. Embuldeniya 7-137
Sri Lanka 67-6, with spinners Bess and Leach sharing the wickets

Update 1 - Sri Lanka 126 all out. (Embuldeniya 40)
England bowling : Bess 4-49, Leach 4-59, Root 2-0
After failing to take a wicket in the Sri Lanka first innings, the England spinners took all the wickets in the second innings (First time that has happenened in Test cricket !) . England need 164 to win.

Update 2 - Tea : England 46-1 (Sibley 14 n.o. , Bairstow 17 n.o.). Shortly before the interval Bairstow hit a six and the ball landed in the groundsman's whitewash bucket! The ball had to be replaced.

Update 3 - England 100-4. The Sri Lanka spinners are making the most of the worn pitch surface. Root out for 11, ten wickets in the match for Embuldeniya so far.

Update 4 - 142 for 4 now. 50 partnership between Sibley and Buttler

Update 5 - Sibley, playing the "anchor" role, has just reached his 50. Very good performance in the circumstances, especially as he had not scored many runs in his previous three innings.

Update 6 - England finished on 164-4 and won by 6 wickets. Sibley 56 n.o, Buttler 46 n.o.
England won the series 2-0.
Joe Root won the "Player of the series" award
(Root scored 42.3 percent of England's runs in this series!)

England go to India next... India are in top form at the moment and likely to be much tougher opponents than Sri Lanka
