Not sure what announcement you mean.

The instructions from the government are that vulnerable children can come to school. I'm not sure whether that includes EHCPs or not. I think so.

The reality is that for many of these children, they are safer at home. Our traditional view of what constitutes "safe" is out of the window. A crowded school and being around other people is not safe. They are going to get the virus and they are going to give it to others. And young people are starting to die. The majority of vulnerable children (admittedly, not all) are not facing as direct a threat to their health and life as that at home.

Kids with EHCPs are different. They may be perfectly safe at home if their needs are educational. Yes, they need the routine. My son needs the school routine too and would have had an EHCP come through if not for this. But that is secondary to this virus. I wouldn't dream of sending my son into a school that a) is an environment where he might catch it and b) absolutely cannot provide him the 1-1 education he normally would have.

It's worth pointing out that what they are getting now in school is not education. It can't be. They should be getting education remotely. At our place the few children coming in are using the computers to do the work being set weekly. There are not necessarily the staff available at the moment to cater for the special needs of children. Most of these children have a regular TA. My son has two. If they are self isolating or sick, there isn't necessarily the staff for him.

My school is down to about 35% staff available now. Nearly 30% are off for 12 weeks because of themselves or someone they live with having underlying conditions. Management is down to two thirds. In our trust, there are only two heads still standing.

Having said that, any school refusing your kids (as opposed to advising against them attending) is going against the government guidance, especially if it's children in care. We are trying our best to keep in touch with those children.

Although guidance changes frequently. My daughter's school announced that both parents have to be key workers yesterday. I have not seen anything official to say that has changed. So no idea.

Ours, as I said are LAC and they have been refused access all over the country. There are of course exceptions to this but the vast majority are saying that children in care should stay at home because they are safe. The announcement was clarity on the guidelines on what constitutes a vulnerable child so those educators refusing children who are looked after, will be taking children who have EHC plans.

This is perhaps not the forum, but carers are pretty much overlooked by the general public. They are doing a brilliant job. I have staff bringing to work several change of clothes in case they are quarantined at work. Amazing stuff, so dedicated.

My understanding of the rules was that LAC were included. None of ours have been coming though, we have more staff than children coming in. Not sure if the government has clarified rules around one or two parents as key workers yet, but my daughter's school has certainly changed it.

The carers and adoptive parents we have worked with have been brilliant. Literally life changing. Totally supportive and soaking up so much toxic emotion.

It was funny yesterday seeing my wife's WhatsApp group for parents at my daughter's school. It's all "teachers need a pay rise", "after two days with my own I've had it, how do they do it with 30", "new found respect for teachers" etc because they are having to teach their own kids for the first time. But none of them ever get to experience what it is like to have to care for a child with special needs or a tough background or behaviour, so they never learn that respect

An Italian academic has claimed striking evidence that most people infected with covid-19 show no symptoms but are still able to infect others, which he says has huge implications for testing policy, particularly in hospitals.

Sergio Romagnani, a professor of clinical immunology at the University of Florence, has reported how blanket testing in a completely isolated village of roughly 3000 people in northern Italy saw the number of people with covid-19 symptoms fall by over 90% within 10 days.

Vo’Euganeo, 50 km west of Venice, was closed off by authorities in mid-February, at which point repeat RNA testing of the entire population began. All those with positive tests were quarantined. The number of people sick from covid-19 fell from 88 to seven in less than 10 days, Romagnani reported.

In an open letter to the authorities in the Tuscany region,1 Romagnani wrote that the great majority of people infected with covid-19—50-75%—were asymptomatic, but represented “a formidable source” of contagion.

“The percentage of people infected, even if asymptomatic, in the population is very high and represents the majority of cases, particularly, but not only, among young people. Isolation of asymptomatics is essential for controlling the spread of the virus and the seriousness of the epidemic,” he said.

He concluded that employing large scale testing to find and isolate asymptomatic cases, particularly among health workers who might unwittingly pass the virus to colleagues or patients, was a vital strategy in containing the spread of the disease.

He told La Repubblica, “We’re deciding not to test doctors and nurses if they’re not developing symptoms. But in the light of the results, this decision could be dangerous; hospitals risk becoming zones with high infections rates in which infected people are not isolated.”

Tom Jefferson, a doctor and epidemiologist at the Nordic Cochrane Centre based in the Veneto region, said the Vo’Eugeano study results would have major implications for testing policy, if they were representative of covid-19 elsewhere.

He noted that Romagnani’s findings appeared to contradict a WHO report based on covid-19 in China.2 This suggested that “the proportion of truly asymptomatic infections is unclear but appears to be relatively rare and does not appear to be a major driver of transmission.”

Other reports suggested that testing on the Diamond Princess cruise ship did find a significant number of symptomless cases.

Jefferson told The BMJ, “There are clearly some contradictions here.” Nonetheless, he said it should be mandatory to do blanket testing.

Jonathan Ball, professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said that the “prevalence of asymptomatic or mild disease and its role in virus transmission and the potential role of children in driving this pandemic” are among the “key matters that need to be resolved.”

With 3405 deaths from covid-19, Italy’s fatalities now exceed those of China. There were 427 deaths in the 24 hours until 6 pm on 19 March, according to Italy’s civil protection chief Angelo Borrelli. China’s death toll is 3245.

Two doctors died from the covid-19 in Como on 19 March, according to the federation of Italian doctors’ guilds. They were respiratory specialist Giuseppe Lanati and family doctor Luigi Frusciante, both of whom had come out of retirement to work during the emergency. There have now been 13 deaths among Italian doctors, the federation said.

The Government has ordered 10,000 ventilators to help tackle the pandemic, Sir James Dyson has said.

There was some initial confusion about the numbers, but Health Minister Edward Argar clarified this morning, stating that there are now 8,000 ventilators in the NHS, up from 5,000.

He said, "I think everyone would appreciate we are moving heaven and earth to get this done as quickly as we can but this is a huge logistical exercise."

Meanwhile the number of people who have signed up to join the NHS' army of volunteers has topped 560,000 in just more than 24 hours.

A huge round of applause from me.

And me. On a more footbally thing, we are converting buildings into hospitals at the same time that some are still thinking the football season will start again soon. Don't think that that is going to happen to be honest.

Good post.
The diamond princess is a goldmine of data because it is complete testing of an enclosed community, much like this Italian village that I hadn't heard about until reading this.

There does seem to be a discrepancy in the asymptomatic patient data from China and elsewhere. That could be for a variety of reasons. Testing is the key.

America has utterly screwed this up by going with a flawed test in February. Alternative tests struggled to get FDA approval. All the while, Trump was saying it was another Chinese Hoax, which made the whole thing highly partisan and half the county no longer heeded the advice. Uh oh.

There is still a ground swell stating that the season must finish even if it means next season is late and curtailed with no cups etc. With the rise of virus testing, football could be played behind closed doors and televised with little change to spread of virus. Certainly help moral. Is it feasible for this to happen by late May? If so, with nine games plus playoffs to go many teams will be effected by players loans running out or contracts finishing. Forest are not weakened too much. Certain players who’s contract comes to an end would likely sign an extension (Watson and Dawson comes to mind) whilst loans could return (Diakhaby, Muric, Samedo) would this weaken any of the opposition much? Is this advantageous or not?

The US is truly terrifying. Trumps popularity is at an all time high with over half of the electorate reportedly backing his response to the virus. Meanwhile Joe Biden ( the seemingly unstoppable Democratic nominee for President) has been pretty much hidden from public view. And for good reason, when he does appear he trips over his own tongue and spralls into what appears to be the confused state of a patient in severe cognitive decline. This leaves Trump (and his allies) able to now begin the process of calling for back to work by Easter at a point where 30 odd states have not even started with the controls to enforce any kind of social distancing measures.
As some are pointing out, this is fundamentally the calculus of how many hundreds of thousands of Grandmas are the gullible electorate prepared to sacrifice in order to save the stock market and enable a second term for Donald?

Ludicrous that they haven't closed the stock markets!

As long as they dont convert the City Ground into a hospital. Woanz would be a dialema if he caught it

Owd Blu still only & always talking about me, whilst weeping into his Fawaz bed spread, endlessly repeating “more money than sand” you’d have thought he’d have learnt from his mistakes but I guess as he’s Fawaz’s number 2 bestest fan in the whole wide world, I guess he hasn’t.

If the city ground does become a hospital will it be a revolving one? That new bridge across the Trent will really help with access.

I’m sure you’re far too calm but nervous about the whole thing anyway. I’d have thought my complete vindication on Fawaz coupled with your & the snertz total humiliation would’ve put you off, plus there’s a lot more going on in the world than you needing to make a complete dick of yourself on the owd World Wide Web.

Poor old Woanz getting owned again by Bluchap

Cracking!

I know duck it’s truly terrible sitting here with no one to talk to whilst City Ground Fawazful goes from strength to strength as they debate the new screens for the hundredth time, how ridiculously expensive takeaway pizza is, the morals & peculiarity of Middle Eastern business practise. I love the constant replays of Natalie Jackson’s hard hitting interviews from palaces & Mayfair houses as well.

Got to keep the goss on lockdown though much like the owd girl. Can’t have anyone & everyone reading that as perish the thought that some of it be wrong.

Anyway must dash got to make some totally unfounded but personal attacks on people because they don’t think Fawaz is the second coming.
