There was one that was harmful and I imagine may have done time for it. Another (art teacher) spent all lessons in the back having a fag.

I was fortunately to have quite a few really great teachers. But some of them were just fantastic human beings. As a child it isn't just about learning a subject. Sometimes you are learning from them about what kind of person you want to be.

Completely agree on the last part, the vast majority of teachers (and lecturers) in my experience however barely make a ripple.

I have a very high opinion of teaching and a mixed opinion of teachers. The two are very different. As I said there are teachers who change your life, that inspire you, that guide you, that help to shape you, that help you to see new possibilities you never dreamt possible.

Then there are the majority of teachers who I'm sure mostly mean well and try their best but ultimately are pretty mediocre at their job.

Finally we have the bullies and the abusers who makes kids lives so much worse. Sadly they exist, maybe they're less prevalent than 30 years ago, I hope so, but I doubt they've disappeared.

For me the solution is to lift teaching up, to make it so you need more than a couple of GCSEs. Double, triple their salaries. Do the same with funding for schools. Make them cathedrals. Make it a profession that attracts the brightest and best.

I like idea of a cathedral to education but they already exist, salaries are much higher and they generally attract good quality staff.

My only issue with this is that they currently cost about 10k a term

This is where strong governance is required. The scientist charged with this will keep sucking through their teeth and pointing at potential issues, which may or may not be causes for genuine concern.
The glaring problem is, strong governance is something which is lacking.

In my experience there was one good teacher in my academic life, the one at primary school, who taught me the 3 R's.

After that, for the entire comprehensive years Iearned absolutely nothing of interest. There was no vision,no career strategy, being taught about kings and queens, how to play the recorder and freaking RE.

From the age of 12, the only part I went for was sport and girls.

I reckon I give more insight to kids day to day than I ever recieved there, i.e how thier interests can be followed and theres industries they have never explored that can be wonderful. For us it was be a fireman or work in a store.

I don't really blame teachers, more the totally pointless system as a whole. When we have leaders coming from comprehensive schools then I will see progress.

to me, it sounds like that with the usual exponential growth of these infections that 50% might as well be 0% i.e you will only catch it off every other person you come into contact with as opposed to every person.
