Covid 19

I think a local mayor would have the power to impose a local lockdown if he thinks it's needed. He would of course then have to take the flak from those who disagree with it.
I believe local councils have that power and have had for some weeks. Our local Councillor threatened to lock down Southend when the beaches were getting overcrowded a few weeks ago.
However, as you say, they would be left with lots of unhappy businesses that rely on summer trade to get them through the rest of the year.

So today the ONS report that the five year average death rate was down for the sixth consecutive week.
I wonder if this continues for a longer term, it will confirm my theory that the covid crisis just accelerated many deaths that were inevitable in the short term.
Time will tell.

Definitely, also heard a virologist on LBC saying that this year is showing record low figures for deaths from flu so many flu deaths are presumably being counted as covid19....or no one is getting flu obviously 🙄

Agreed for all those who had underlying health conditions.

There are of course some who had no underlying health conditions but as you say the majority probably did.

It seems to me that the realisation that CPAP can be effective treatment probably saved many from being put on ventilators.

I expect a big increase in the winter months though, combination of a change from outdoor to indoor living and the usual seasonal flu

Flu is usually much worse for older people just like covid.
Of the 29,650 people that have died in hospital with covid present, only 232 were under 40 and most of those had underlying issues .
Most of the others were in care homes and obviously vulnerable or they wouldn’t be in a care home.
It’s the Boomer Remover.

Deloitte ffs. An accountacy firm. What the f#ck do they know about public health issues?

I suspect this is a blind spot for you ‘58. The Big4 do more than just accountancy. They do a lot of consultancy work in the NHS and have specialised teams with a wealth of knowledge about health.

Trashbat - with all this experience, how come they are still crap (and that includes their accountancy performance as well)?

Wot Rotherhithe said in the next post.

Chronic failure to use local expertise and join the dots.

All deaths are inevitable after the event. Many deaths come much sooner than expected. Covid has killed lots of people, including the collaterals, it will kill many more worldwide. It won't stop until it is stopped, everywhere.

Given that international travel was the main driver of the pandemic, I’m quite amazed that so many want to continue international travel.

I was in Tesco last night just about to pick up a net of Kiwi fruit, when a woman (not wearing a mask) said "I don't know how you can wear a mask, I tried and hated it."
I just turned and replied, "Well if you hate wearing a mask, you are really not going to like the ventilator".

What a response 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I am surprised at how many I see without masks in shops. Its not optional, but in this country compliance with rules is increasingly becoming optional.

I dont blame the police but they are increasingly becoming peace keepers not law enforcement.

Our society is increasingly selfish and people know that the police won't intervene and even if they do the courts will let people off.

Beginning to think we need a bit more dictatorship and a bit less guidance to rid us of Covid-19

Not dictatorship we need but a bit more politeness, fellow feeling and imagination regarding a world beyond our own time span. We have made a fetish of personal choice and entitlement backed up by statute and legal rulings. That's great for general oneupmanship but not so great for covid and all the other problems we are beginning to face.

You would be right if we had that kind of society. There is a unfortunately a significant minority in the "I'll do what I want" mindset. As I often say to my team at work the measures we are putting in are less about protecting you but more about protecting your colleagues. We n3eed a few more boy scouts for those who remember the motto.
