Coronavirus

So we have cummings breaking rules early. Setting a president so every man and his dog can go where the hell they want during lockdown.
Now we have some scottish MP not being sacked or fined for going on a jolly, gyms, public transport, travel half the length of the country WITH covid, WITH symptoms.
So we can do what the hell we want then and get away with it. Even if we are highly contagious.
Nice.

Partly Wittonite, but also calling back retired nurses/specialists and uber promoting students for more basic stuff they would already know. On my understanding the nightingales were supposed to relieve normal pressure on the NHS (for people who needed beds but not necessarily constant monitoring etc) so more beds within hospitals were freed up for oxygen support etc etc with more modernly trained staff who knew how to handle things.

I am more of the “let the youngsters out as long as it doesn’t overwhelm the NHS” persuasion, however one thing I was looking at earlier - somewhere around 0.001% of under 44’s will die from COVID, and there are roughly 36 million people under 44 in the U.K.

By my maths that’s 36,000 - not far off the size of Villa Park - of under 44’s alone that would die if they caught it on the fatality rate, which is very low as a percentage.

That’s quite a scary number in absolute terms. I know it won’t go down well, but I think we might need to support the vulnerable and that includes those who are young who are obese or have underlying health issues, to isolate whilst the rest of us get back to normal.

Now isn’t the time for that, but come January or February, it has to be for me.

I agree with you dan. As you know I have posted before on this subject and believe it is my own resposibility as an old un to look after myself.
There is no proven vaccine on the horizen despite various claims which dont stand up to scrutiny.
The damage to the economy will be massive.
You cannot lock down huge age groups within our population for ever when they are the ones that by and large dont get ill, and it is them that will suffer the financial pain, and be saddled with the increased taxes long after I am dead and buried.

But also, the theory doesn't work in practice, the young mix with the older and the old.

The vulnerable need to be told to shield and take responsibility too, of course. This isn’t the case for all, but if you are a grandparent and you know your teenage or early 20 something grandkids are going out clubbing every weekend - don’t let them in the house!

It’s impossible to enforce shielding, the only way to do it is to offer financial and logistical support on a grand scale to the vulnerable to encourage them to do so. If we go with a scenario where life is allowed to continue to build up herd immunity with the least risky, the old and vulnerable will need to play their part too and take a sacrifice.

Its an odd thing to me to have to ask certain people to make a sacrifice, in order to protect their life potentially. Surely nature means we all do what we can to stay alive it’s the animal instinct in us. If I was vulnerable I’d be doing what a few here are doing and stay locked in

Yup, trouble is, yourself, me and most on there are using common sense and logic.

Then look at the way people have behaved this year and.............!

I do have some small sympathy for the Gov, because there's no fix here without risk but it's also why I think Labour have been incredibly polite towards them at the same time on true cock ups where they haven't got the hammering they deserved.

The young care for the old for a start. We're a shielding family in effect, yet I have to risk the shop for bits and bobs and even then, youngest with school and so on. Shielding or not, if I told the school to shove it I'd then have to debate how Covid safe our local Magistrates is and so on. We're also bubbled with the old man whose not at great risk here and could certainly be out and about a lot more had we not looked at a sensible middle ground on things.

But as Dan absolutely points out - those who could choose differently should face the consequences on going out and getting pissed etc and families have their role in that.

We can't continue building debt as we can't continue never leaving the house. A falling birth rate already had people worried about pensions and taking care of the elderly in numbers (whilst keeping the economy high), Covid blows those concerns out of the water really, factoring in reduced education and the like - growing mental health etc. That's before we even address what level of granddad I'll need to be before the country has dealt with the current deficit!

But we're now sort of hamstringed until we get to next spring/summer based on the very cockups the Gov have made with lurching, pandering, track and no trace, test and no test whilst Bojo spaffed money up a wall on moonshots, thunder strikes, and thunder pants.

We've wasted months on finding a proper plan and balance to move forward and given we all know, despite the ramblings of the NHS being open, it's not through no fault of the staff either! Going into winter with everything else to consider in terms of expected annual bugs puts us even further behind.

But hey ho, we're sticking it to those pesky Europeans and the rich continue to prosper whilst footballers have to pressure the Gov to give kids a sandwich at lunchtime.

Yes, interesting but slightly puzzling report that isn't it? Masks and the air con removing the particles though, hopefully that is right.

Chaos innit.
So did Matt Hancock attend a post 10pm lock in at the commons!!
He refused to answer the question 30 times apparently.

I was watching a feature on how China did their lockdown and basically the virus has gone from there now. BUT the ways they did it and the powers they hold do not sit well in a libertarian country (the west) and now China will ride off into the sunny uplands leaving economically countries like the US and us in their wake.

PS Andrew Marr just said Track and Trace has cost 9BILLION pounds.

The biggest clue as to whether he did or didnt lies in the fact that none of the other political parties MPs want to take this issue on.
That would lead you to think that there were MPs of all parties present so they want it kept quite.

I suppose this is the upside of living in a brutal communist dictatorship.
