Commonwealth Games 2022

Can't believe the club twitter feed is supporting this.

If Birmingham gets the games, odds on the scum will end up with a new stadium at the expense of brummie taxpayers, just like happened in Manchester.

Come on Villa fans - back Liverpool or anywhere else instead!

Unless it involves helping the homeless situation in our city (or any city) with investment, I don't care much where it goes.

They always say this sort of thing brings money to a region, I'm not sure the economics bear that out. If we really want to bring kudos to the area, then fine, go for it, but the real kudos would come in helping clear the growing problem of people sleeping rough in the city. One properly funded tower block would probably be all it would take. Then go for the games with pride.

Games, be it the Commonwealth or, the Olympic, do bring in a lot of money to an area Jonathan.
The big problem is, the money doesn't stay in the area, as usual, it finds it's way into the bank accounts of the rich.
Publicly funded housing for the homeless, is something that should be done out of common decency, not to make the city look good in the eyes of the world.
If publicly funded housing was done for the games, we all know that once the world's eyes were turned away, that publicly funded housing would end up in the hands of private landlords.

They say that the facilities left are left for the locals etc, not what I've heard from a few locals around London after the Olympics though.

And of course it should be common decency, that's why I'm saying it. But if Brum wants to lead the way, that's the way to do it, not with commonwealth games.

Jonathan, I think we are In danger of turning this thread into a political forum as I can't see a way of discussing this subject without getting political.
Now while I am more than happy to have such a discission with you, or anyone else, I think this is the wrong place.

The whole thread isn't exactly in the right forum but if I'm happy as forum owner with the thread, then I'd not worry to be fair. Sport is politics along with everything else.

I'll soon move threads if I consider them in the wrong place. As said, this isnt' really Villa or football but I have been ok with keeping it here.

Great politics thread and other threads in Witton Lane by the way folks, always enjoy fresh opinions and debates in there, sometimes nice to escape football .. or to do football then join us in the other madness!

Sorry gents if in the wrong place.

Not really Villa or politics in intent - a cry from the heart that we don't let the scum benefit from any event in 2022.

Our recent demise has left us with a better ground and better history than them, and little else.

If they get a 50k+ (albeit empty) stadium out of it, then I'd suggest a few of us on here won't be happy.

Alexander stadium has always been an athletics stadium. From what I've read, after the games it'll be downsized and continue to be used as such for ongoing track and field events which the stadium hosts regularly anyway. Would they move to Perry Barr from small Heath? I doubt it. Pretty much everything is here in Brum to host the games, would be great for the city to have them and worrying about what 'they' might/might not gain from it over not having the games here is a bit ridiculous. I was in Glasgow at the time of the games (But didn't go to any events) and there was a great buzz around the city, would be good to see that here.

nah, it's fine, I'd soon move threads into Witton Lane if we got too many non Villa/footie. No problem. Especially as it's summer.

It will probably end up in WItton Lane mind you, so when you look for it, look there!

Remember paying a couple of quid in the summer holidays to get in to Alexander and mess about during the summer holidays , circa 1982 , happy days.

Yeah. I believe the Alexander Stadium would be upgraded, Villa Park for the Rugby, Birmingham University for other various 'minor' sports, it did say about the swimming but I can't remember and the Equestrian would go to Stoneleigh, so I think small heath is well out of it.
