Manchester City`s Premier League/Ship record against Middlesbrough is appalling...To say they are a City bogey team is an understatement. But they are about to face their first full strength City side of His Highness Sheikh Mansour's era..
The Blues record against Boro in 20 Premier League games is a shocker. Middlesbro have won 12, there have been 5 draws and City have won a pisspoor 3 times. Expand that dreadful record out beyond the top flight since it changed forever in 1992 and there have been two Championship games which resulted in a win apiece and 3 cup games of which Boro won two and City one.
In conclusion, City have beaten Boro 5 times across 24 years whilst shipping defeat to the Teesiders a whopping 15 times! The Blues record against Middlesbro prior to 1992 isn`t that much cop either and overall across all competitions the two clubs are locked together on 49 wins each.
By far and away the most chastening defeat of this difficult run came 5 head to heads ago on Teeside whereby Sven-Goran Eriksson`s fall through the then City of Manchester Stadium trapdoor was confirmed with an 8-1 annihilation of a cowardly City side who raised the white flag resulting in the local police setting about distraught City fans with gusto. How the home fans rubbed it in with relish.
Here on VMC we declared that City under Thaksin Shinawatra were in a State of Emergency:
"Surely something has to give sooner rather than later so we can once and for all be put out of our misery and begin to see where we go from here.
It struck me post that shocking 8-1 demolition that any new manager, particularly one not familiar with the Premier League would hold on to many of our gutless players as he would need to assess them before getting rid. That could see another reprieve for all the wasters and chancers we are carrying.
A capitulation like the one at Middlesbrough should precipitate the mother of all clear outs, regardless of the uncertainty that has engulfed the club.
The players attitude was shameful. Again. They have thrown in the towel and let us all down far too often, and far too easily this season."
Dark days indeed, but the events at the end of that season provide a timely reminder of how far we have come during this week, one of the greatest weeks in our club`s history. Straw clutching Stretfords still bleat about "history." Well, Manchester City supporters will never forget where we have come from and what we have been through.
This week Middlesbro arrive in Manchester to face a very different proposition to the ones they have confronted previously. Few Blues, especially those truncheoned on Teeside 8 years ago will have much sympathy if a City side who have just smashed West Brom and Barcelona take Boro to the proverbial cleaners.
