What precisely is 'The United Way?'
As a visiting support that didn't take up its full allocation wildly celebrated a 0-0 draw at liddle ciddy at the final whistle and a fawning rag media queued up to praise a 'Mourinho masterclass,' I was left completely bemused as to how such a turgid United side can be constantly afforded that mystical descriptive for how football is supposed to be played.
To put it bluntly, Jose Mourinho's side were as brutal as they have been on the 2 previous occasions the City squad in two vastly different selection guises faced them this season. If anything they were even more unadventurous.
The Stretford Galacticos have gradually morphed into Maureen's Inexplicables as a long season has worn on. Only Middlesbrough qualify ahead of the rags as the most boring side in the Premier League for goal action per game. Fact. The media arslikhan afforded to a manager with a record not that much superior to his lovable nutcase predecessor who had less financial backing has been amazing, not least the relentless drivel over a 24 game unbeaten run. Half of those games were drawn, often fortuitously and most of the wins were scrape throughs that regularly benefitted from preferential refereeing - and boy were the Thursday night specialists lucky to exit the city walls without a drubbing. The rags have only won 4 out of the last 14 Premier League derbies. How times have changed.
Which brings us neatly to the subject of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City and yet ANOTHER failure to put away inferior opposition in a game they totally controlled. Once again, the Blues were over reliant on Sergio Aguero. I shudder at the thought of where we would be this season without him. As they did against Arsenal at Wembley, City racked up another 20 shots but only hit the target a handful of times. What these two games have shown is how the men in behind the Blues talisman are not weighing in consistently with enough goals. The lack of conviction when clean through on goal that Raz Sterling demonstrates epitomises a season long albatross that the team have been unable to shake off. A young Frank Lampard would be scoring goals for fun in this system. Had the unfortunate Ilkay Gundogan been with us across the four campaigns, his own late runs into the box could have made a telling difference from what increasingly looks like 'the season that got away.' A second successive dalliance with failing to qualify for the Champions League continues...
- JB will be away for the Boro game but back for Palace.
