Christian Country?

I'm not sure if this needs a new thread, but it does sort of relate to this one. A report just published says that nearly 50% of the UK population describe themselves as non-religious, with only 40% saying they are Christian.

Is the UK really a Christian Country?

Yes, because we may not be religious but we live by Christian values.

The CIA believe that by 2050 Europe will have embraced the Religion of Peace.

Had this debate before, can't find it, I don't live by Christian values, I live my common decency.

https://humanism.org.uk/campaigns/religion-and-belief-some-surveys-and-statistics/

The 2014 British Social Attitudes Survey found that 58.4% of the population never attend religious services while only 13.1% of people report going to a religious service once a week or more. Of the 16% of people who define as belonging to the Church of England, 51.9% never attend services and in fact only 10.7% of people who identify with the Church of England report attending church at least weekly. More generally, the 2014 BSA Survey discovered that 58.3% of people who were brought up in a religion never attend services, and only 12.8% do so on a weekly basis.

However, self-reported Church attendance is invariably higher than actual recorded attendance.

According to Religious Trends No 7 published by Christian Research, overall church attendance in the United Kingdom diminished rapidly from 1980 to 2005 in both proportional and real terms.

In 1980 5,201,300 people, representing 11.1% of the UK population, attended Church on a given Sunday, but by 2005 this number had reduced to 3,166,200, equating to 6.3% of the UK population. By 2015, the level of church attendance in the UK is predicted to have fallen to 3,081,500 people, or 5% of the population.

No, we don't live by Christian values at all. We live by values developed over centuries with many, many influences.

Christian values would have us stoning people for adultery, and persecuting Homosexuals.

This.

Christian values include such tripe as "an eye for an eye".

I don't believe in such things. I prefer to rise above things where I can.

Agreed Deano and also Heath... a lot of the values were pagan values and a lot of the pagan festivals were kind of adopted by the Christians at the time!

The same can be said for the majority of European countries...

Apart from Italy and a few of the Eastern Block ones, I think you might be right. I haven't looked, so can't say for sure, but I suspect the major European Countries are no longer Christian.

Be interesting to know which countries are the most Christian in regards to attending church?

I think you have to be respectful of peoples beliefs but if people are only being nice to one another because they're frightened a man with a beard will punish them, then they are dicks, you can have morals because you have intelligence, not because some reworked book of fiction (which is pretty nasty and horrible anyway) says so.

What was the count of people declaring themselves Christian on the last census? Surely that is the most reliable source of evidence?!

Here's the link to it face! Many more who identify themselves with being Christian that actually attend church it seems. The no was 59.2% of the population which is no where near those who attend, so alot of nominal/non denominational Christians then.

Looking at that article, and chart, it is surprising some would say that the no of Christians start falling from the 50 + mark. I know there is alot of younger Christians within the church as a whole than people realise

Here's the link too. http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/census/2011-census/detailed-characteristics-for-local-authorities-in-england-and-wales/sty-religion.html

On any papers now i call myself Church of England when asked what religion i do attend church for weddings and funerals and was bought up with christian ish values i suppsoe even though my nan was catholic lol so work that out, not religious but i do tend to look up at the sky many times in my life when things happen bad in life and ask for help so maybe i am religious ish but this country has old fashioned values i ay sure if that is christian traditions or just traditons dunno

I think when they say this country is based on Christian values it means that the good of Christ message is where this comes from. Whilst yes Christians read the whole Bible, The O.T is actually Jewish not Christian. Christianity did not start until after Jesus birth and life. Christianity is taken from the name Christ hence, if anyone is wondering what I mean

I dont think anyone believes in a man with a long beard in the sky over the age of 12. face. That picture was given to give children something to focus on physically. It was never meant to be a picture of whom God is

Rubbish, I love how Christian values are now touted as "all the good stuff" I have no beliefs taken from a book of plagiarised short stories from earlier belief systems, I also have no problem with those who find the same gender attractive, I don't believe throwing rocks at someone till they die is the right thing to do, I'm also happy to accept females have the same rights as males, how very un christian of me!

I've never known a bunch of people more christian than Americans. They go nuts over a bit of god porn.

Then again they tend to go a bit OTT about most things.

It's not a reliable source at all, as is asks leading questions. The main one is "What religion are you?". The British Humanist Association is trying to get it changed.

Every other survey shows a much lower percentage of Christians than the Census. The recent Yougov pole asked "do you believe that Jesus was the son of God?", to which only 27% agreed that he was. To me, if you don't believe this, you aren't a Christian.

Most people are actually humanist in their beliefs, not Christian, if they are analysed, even though they don't know it!!!
