Vatican admits to handling 3,400 cases of child abuse by priests since 2004

BY DESCRIER STAFF ON MAY 7, 2014 HEADLINES, WORLD

The Vatican revealed for the first time the extent of the child abuse issues that have plagued the Catholic church over the last decade during an interrogation by the UN Committee against Torture (CAT).

The Holy See’s permanent observer to the UN in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi told the committee that the Vatican had defrocked 848 priests who were believed to have raped or molested children, and sanctioned a further 2,572 priests for lesser offences since 2004.

According to the AP, Tomasi also admitted that the Vatican only explicitly ordered bishops to report credible accusations of child abuse to the police as well as forward the cases to Rome for review, after finding that bishops would shuffle ‘problem’ priests between dioceses rather than imposing a church trial. However, he said that now there was a total commitment by the Vatican to clean house and prevent future abuse.

US victim support group for those affected by child abuse from the Church, SNAP, commented on the statistics said that “every step towards more transparency about clergy sex crimes and cover ups is good”, but continued by pushing for more information on the abusers so that parents can protect their children from abuse in the future.

......sadly

The Church needs to face up to its crimes rather than just moving on 'problem' priests etc

You're probably right ST, but I was just shocked at the sheer numbers over a period in time when they'd been claiming that it wasn't the issue it once was!!

feck knows what they did in previous years - staggering really absolutely staggering.

A mix of the affected, shifty businessmen and Scumbags...the lot of them.

Priests are shifty businessmen?!

They are on a set wage, no? They are gainfully employed by the church, no? Would they do it for no wage?? I doubt it.

Add to that Expenses.

Oh, and they recite hilarious ghost stories.

As a Christian Believer ('born again' variety) it's appalling to me that things have been done in the name of Christians. Of all places that children should be safe and well looked after, it is in the church and around Christians. Although I'm not Roman Catholic, I'm sure there are a huge number of Catholics who are as outraged as the rest of us about what has gone on there. I always say that in every organisation, football club, golf club, etc, or social gathering, even churches, there are good and bad members. There shouldn't be any in churches and usually the churches are the first to condemn it. Most people join various organisations for the proper purpose of the organisation but there are also those on the fringe of activities, who are there for other reasons. In our Church we try to ensure that all bases are covered. We have a strict code as they do in schools with CRB checks for anyone working with children, health and safety rules and codes of practice etc to ensure that there are checks in place to protect everyone, not just the kids and most of the churches I know do the same.

How this went on for so long without being detected, is awful. I really hope that it should never happen again, most especially in a church environment. Unfortunately there are sick predators in all countries, including our own and we need people to be vigilant to protect the innocent.

I agree with what you say; but it's looking increasingly clear that these perverts saw the Catholic Church (and perhaps still do) as some sort of refuge where they could pratice their perversions with impunity and were actually protected for decades.

I'm well used to church circles and what goes on there and it has always been a very innocent place for me but I feel sure that SOMEONE would have seen and known about anything 'going on'. If so, why did they not report it? Our attitude would have been that children should be protected at ALL costs whether priests were involved or not. It's utterly amazing that SO much went on for SO long and to SUCH an extent without it hitting the press. Or were Catholics in the press industry muzzled to keep it quiet?

It must be so painful for the true catholics to see all this unfold... as with everything those who saw the opportunity seized it and unfortunately were 'protected' by the others. It is frightening though that with the law of averages there are plenty more who are still out there .... but got to say well done to Church for facing up to it rather than brushing it under the carpet ...again...

Don't give them too much credit. They pretty much had to do something after the UN intervened and threatened an investigation.

Whatever you belong to, it's awful when something you invest your trust in gets it's reputation savaged whether it's a football club that's let down in public by idiotic supporters or more seriously a body of people who uphold and practice good morals and behaviour who have those morals savaged by others in the organisation who don't care about good behaviour and are there for other malicious and sordid reasons.

I don't know how regular Catholics deal with the matter but I'm sure those who are genuine Christians will find a way to forgive those who have acted against them in such a bad way. That's the basis of what they believe. It's not an easy thing but people do it because they don't want the matter spoiling their spirit or cluttering up their minds for ever with bad thoughts against the perpertrators.

Welshtel - the Catholics I know are dealing with it through their faith .... it's their comfort that the Vatican is tackling it instead of brushing it away...

Unfortunately these mind sets pervade very sort - even the agnostic ones....

Faith doesn't heal tortured children!

What the Catholic church has done is unforgivable. The fact that in general, women play second fiddle and seem to go along with it, is astounding.

But, they were brushing it away until forced to act.

Whilst abuse does happen outside the Church, this was organised and hidden. The fact that the belief structure teaches that it is absolutely wrong, and yet it continued, makes it that much worse.

Actually Jesus heals tortured children and people. Our church (Victory Outreach Church in Cwmbran South Wales) is getting great results with all sorts of people with all sorts of needs. We are an evangelical, Pentecostal Church. We have a rehab unit and many different facilities: Youth work, missions etc and all are really successful but on the basic matter, of healing people's lives, people are finding that God is making the big difference in their lives and doing all sorts of healing, whether physical, mental, psychological etc. You should take a look at our Website:

http://www.vouk.org.uk/ Many of our Pastors are ex Drug dependant people and were in prison for it etc but have completely changed their life around in our rehab unit. They now live new lives and they're really nice guys, their wives too. In fact, if I wanted a friend, I couldn't ask for nicer, more genuine people than these. They also know how to treat others in the same predicament because they've been there.

To return to the thread, it would be devastating to have your church's name, which is doing well and achieving such a lot in the community, blackened by unthinking individuals.

Where is this healer?

I've only seen a white man's depiction of him in (sometimes horrific and) graphic paintings.

People heal people. Not fables.
