Chilcot Inquiry

Fulford

Vital Football Legend
Wednesday see's the release of the report into the Iraq war. It will be interesting to see if Tony Blair is held to blame for getting involved in a war by believing the lie that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

If so should he face a war crimes trial.

one report saying Blair might face impeachment. I can't believe how high profile he has been recently. Also cant believe how much money he has made since he left office.

Senior figures from Labour and the Scottish National party are considering calls for legal action against Tony Blair if the former prime minister faces severe criticisms from the long-awaited inquiry into the war in Iraq.

A number of MPs led by Alex Salmond are expected to use an ancient law to try to impeach the former prime minister when the Chilcot report comes out on Wednesday.

Good Panorama on catch up re Iraq. Doesn't add massively to what we know but still some interesting interviews and views.

So he should.

Wonder how much of it he has seen. Think they have all had to see it if they are featured but not totally sure.

Just a shame this wasn't done years back really.

I would love to see Blair and Dubya in the dock at the same time. They both have a lot to answer for given the state of world security

The guy is a total fraud and always has been a Thatcherite with a red tie and along with Bush a lying twat that executed a person they once supported who simply had out lived his use honestly hope he goes to jail but there's no chance really. But the real crime is the innocent lives lost on all sides because some narcissistic idiot and his puppet wanted to be the big boys.

I may be wrong but I very much doubt that the report will nail Blair. There will be enough criticism for the anti-Blair band to kick up a stink, but it will fall short of damning evidence. Just my opinion.

I suspect you are probably right but do let us dream for a day or two.

Oul' Tony doing his porridge in Wormwood Scrubs would be good enough.

Agreed Wurzel, be very surprised if it tells us much more than we already know.

All for him being brought to trial if he is exposed but I still say the rest of the cabinet should stand alongside him they were privy to the same info. Prescott at least had the decency to stand up and say as much last night but the rest of the worms will no doubt slide into their holes.

Report now out and it's damning of Blair.

Surely now he should face trial for war crimes.

The trouble is, the International War Crimes Tribunal have said they can only try crimes committed IN war itself; they have no jurisdiction on how a decision/decisions to go to war are made.

He may get impeached by parliament under an old law (last used 1806, I think) and would face 'trial by parliament' where a simple majority would convict him. However, the punishment is not likely to imprisonment - I'm sure they'll look after their own, as it were, even though he's not the most popular person in Westminster.....

Has anyone ever witnessed anything so false as Blair's false one word at a time speech earlier. Get the mass murderer to The Hague.

I may be in the wrong here but what exactly has been achieved by having the 5 or 6 inquiries into the Gulf War, and how much has it cost for all this? I wish they would have spent the cash in the first place in equipping our troops properly. Has anybody changed their mind as a result of these? As far as I can tell nobody is going to be prosecuted over Iraq. We haven't even learned any lessons from it, so now we have a terrorist cult thriving in the Middle East and we sit back and let it happen, somehow afraid to deal with it, and the people who pay for it are the public in numerous terrorist acts across the globe, most of who are Muslims suffering at the hands of these terrorists.

Oops - I didn't see this separate thread till now so originally posted this in the Politics one.

"The downfall of Tony Blair" - an Irish perspective.

There is a sadness shared by many in Ireland to see former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair face his greatest political challenge ever - the damning Chilcot Report.
We remember the positive role he played in the Irish peace process, leading to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. No British prime minister, before or since, has shown the level of engagement and determination that Blair displayed in helping to end decades of civil strife and to seek a solution that was not Brit-centric.
