Charlton

"ESI bought Charlton for an initial £1 from Roland Duchatelet in January and it was announced in June a consortium put together by lawyer Chris Farnell and led by Manchester-based businessman Elliott had purchased ESI.

"There is scepticism about why Elliott, whose background is in property and hospitality, got involved in Charlton when football was still shut down and clubs feared going out of business. Farnell was Bury’s lawyer when they were expelled from the EFL, eight months after Dale bought the club for £1."

You couldn't make this stuff up, no one would believe you.

Is eight months not long enough to provide proof of funding?

Bit like a Python script:-
Here's one.
Nine pence.
I'm not dead!
What?

seems like the candidates are surfacing to replace last season's chaos teams - bury / bolton / southend.
swindon/wigan/charlton...?

add the covid chaos, and imo, the order of the fixtures could play a big part in getting a good start. will we be in the well prepared/squad assembled early and raring to go group?

It all has a worryingly familiar air about it.

We seem to be in a relatively good position, for which we should be suitably grateful to the board, management and to those great fans who have elected to take shares rather than refunds for their season tickets.

We should, however, avoid poking fun at or taking delight in other clubs' situations. Especially as all too often those situations are the result of hugely cavalier chairman and/boards.

Come on you Imps!!!!!!!!!!! ©

Uncanny, isn't it? Wigan have all the hallmarks of being next season's Bolton, Christ knows what their squad will look like when the season kicks off. Another team of teenagers, perhaps? Charlton are under a transfer embargo with ownership problems, possibly next season's Bury with the same lawyer involved with both.

I am currently researching our Season Preview, and there are so many stories to tell. Sunderland are up for sale, Swindon are tied up in knots, Gillingham claim to have the smallest budget in League One, Hull are a rancorous mess, AFCW have massive financial commitments, Rochdale are losing £125,000 per week, Burton are putting most of their players on one-year deals (including Eardley and Bostwick), and many more.

It is interesting seeing so many Vital members entering the Where Will They Finish? competition. With a few exceptions, hardly anyone has made any signings, and some clubs have no more than a dozen players at the moment. As highlighted, there are some time bombs set to go off at various stages. Even with the information I have collected on each club, I can honestly say that I have not the slightest idea how the season is likely to pan out for each one.

I don't think anyone is poking fun at them, more commenting on the position some are in. It could well be a season for those smaller clubs who have remained below the radar - Doncaster, Oxford, Blackpool - to do well.

totally agree with you Barney , although there is a lot of it about .

They may well appeal. In comes the independent panel...........

Oh the dreaded non-independent independent panel, who have their number one rule as being "make sure every decision we make is the worst possible one we can come up with and never ever punish the billy big balls clubs".

Charlton have appealed on behalf of two of the three - Paul Elliott and Bury FC lawyer Chris Farnell. The third person disqualified (Andrei Mihail) has resigned from the board of East Street Investments. As this has now been going on for seven months, it is hard to see how an appeal is going to change anything.

Charlton are not allowed to sign any players in the interim, as the club is under a transfer embargo until new ownership is ratified (in other words, until adequate proof of funding is received). Deals for MK Dons' star player Alex Gilbey and for Conor Washington are on hold.

Maybe Mr Elliott and Mr Dale can get together and set up a new League so that they can play each other. That way no-one will be able to interfere and money skimming can be built into the rules to get extra points. Steve Evans could chair the independent panel adjudicating on those who accidentally comply with the rules.

Now there's a good idea!
Bolton must have earned promotion into this elite league too.
And Sheff Wed making a late bid too.

Farnell has now resigned as a director of East Street Investments, leaving Paul Elliott as the only person still involved to be a disqualified person. Farnell is the one who came up with the Brazilian priest who was allegedly itching to buy Bury a year ago. Farnell is an interesting character, if anyone has a few minutes to spend online.

Mr Farnell's record (the bits that he doesn't advertise on his website) include,
  • Representing Massimo Cellino's takeover of Leeds and being the one who sacked Brian McDermot before Cellino actually had authority to do so
  • Going on trial for attacking his wife and admitting striking her
  • Lawyer at Bury as they were kicked out of the league
  • Being accused of bullying at an industrial tribunal following the acrimonious takeover of Swansea
  • Leaving his employment and taking 3 staff with him to set up his own Law Firm, IPS
  • Doesn't seem to have 'quite' been able to represent Fabio Cappello on his appointment to the England team, as he didn't represent him when he contacted the FA about his availability
  • Represented Diego Lemos in his failed attempt to purchase Morecambe which nearly forced them out of business
  • Implicated in a perjury trial over cuts in Gavin McCann's 2015 transfer to Bolton (ultimately cleared)
At the very least you have to question Mr Farnell's ability to properly vet the standing of his own clients.

Meanwhile at the DW Stadium, the Wigan administrators have set a deadline of 31 August to not only find a buyer, but also to sign the contract. Nervous times for them.
