Changing stadiums - does it affect form?

An excellent piece of analysis of clubs who've had to do it in recent years - worth a read for those who want to see the recent history of this 'debate'..

"With all the talk of a tough season ahead for Tottenham Hotspur as they play their home games at Wembley, we’ve looked at a selection of teams in the top five European leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France) who have moved stadium since 2000. How did other teams fare after moving stadium at the end of the season? ..."

Interesting but if players can't adapt then they have weak mentalities. For me it's just another excuse at the ready for failure.

Well it seems almost every team that's ever switched stadia based on that criteria have a bunch of players with weak mentalities...!

can that be so?

I think there are probably other factors at play beyond the simple stadium move - that is th trouble with statistics. Change of manager, loss of major / influential players, injuries and good old fashioned 'luck'.

Looking forward to seeing what happens with us, but I hate the ready made excuse that some of our fans will latch onto - just like the Wembly thing . At Wembley the fact is that we have not had good results, but some of the performances warranted more than the results showed, and that would be down to 'luck'. If the players let a fear factor take a hold in their brains, then I guess it is likely it become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

really there's no reason playing away from home should affect your form either, but it does. Wasn't there a period under AVB where WHL was a bit toxic and the we had the best away form in the league but were a bit shit at home?

It's an interesting question. The negatives of playing away. There are some. Travel will affect performance. Condition of pitch .

Fan reception/support can still make a huge difference between being on the front foot or being more reserved in your play; a sports science professor from Leicester (I can't think of his name at the mo) spent a lot of time looking at this stuff and was retained by Mourinho at the chav's to prepare his squad for playing away from home - last I heard he now consults for Manure as well.

The other big difference is the mental preparedness of the away team.

Mourinho himself studied at the Instituto Superior de Educação Física in Lisbon, (Portugal’s leading sports university - who also worked with Dier early doors ), and came under the influence of Professor Manuel Sérgio, who was one of the first to expound the theory that football knowledge wasn't good enough on it's own to become a winning player / manager, he enforced and taught that a coach also had to be a psychologist, a public speaker and have a grasp of all the physical and mental sciences.

Mourinho in his master classes credits him as one of his biggest formative influencers of his 'philosophy'. If you ever get the chance, listening to him talk is something else.
