Beyond the horse trailers, haystacks and doughnut stands at a busy rodeo in Alberta, prairies stretch for hundreds of miles. Here, in the land of big oil and small government, it is hard to avoid the simmering resentment of Canada’s embattled prime minister.
Justin Trudeau may be a global liberal icon but in Alberta, which feels like another world from Canada’s stuffy capital, Ottawa, farmers, oil workers and ranchers have had enough of him. “How about a scary one like ‘Justin Trudeau’,” quips the rodeo announcer while running through the names of the horses. “You can’t fix stupid, but you can sure vote it out.”
