Championship breakaway?

An article in the Mail today on this. The Championship clubs have apparently been having further secret discussions during Covid about breaking away from the rest of the EFL because they want an even greater share of TV revenues and more autonomy to vary even more from the rules for the rest of the EFL. They effectively want to be PL2, with promotion to the PL but no relegation from the Championship. Ironically, it is the PL who may torpedo this. The PL are happy to provide further financial assistance to L1 and L2 (that doesnt cost that much) but are threatening to not provide support the Championship because they won't implement key changes. Those changes include introducing a salary cap to address the £600m annual losses in the Championship and properly banning the sale and leaseback of stadiums. They also want the Championship to support the PL objections to the FA new regulations which severely limit under 21 signings from outside the UK after Brexit. The Championship have not supported the PL on that because they get a lot from transfer fees from the PL by selling younger players. The PL also don't want a PL2 because it may mean a greater share of TV revenues going to PL2.
The Championship are hoping many L1 and L2 clubs will go bust or will not be able to complete fixtures because of testing costs. That would give them more justification to resign from the EFL and breakaway. They woild have to give notice by 31 December to leave by next June.

Sounds like a load of bollocks can't see it ever happening

The EPL and EFL are both laws unto themselves. It feels to me like the businessmen who run them, out of pure self interest, have too much control over how the game in this country is run. Even in the USA, the motherland of capitalism, professional sports are controlled very differently, and by regulatory bodies that ensure a much more coherent, sustainable and robust system.
