Championship Average Gates

... fair play to Sunderland given their home record. Mind, half of them are back in the pub by half-time.

And Wolves... did they have many sell outs?

I know I keep going on about this but name a bigger club north of London and south of Manchester.... you can't because there isn't one.

Sixty thousand seater stadium (with safe standing on the New Holte) please Mr Chinese redevelopment man.. either at Villa Park or near the city centre.

* dreams *

That's a fantastic attendance from the Villa faithful. We might not be in the Premier League just yet but we have a top drawer fanbase.

I'm surprised at Sunderland. Their big boast is that they are a huge club because of their attendance but their stadium has been half full this season.

Fair play to Burton. We beat their total attendance in 3 average games. They were really up against it this season.

Also, our average attendance for the Championship would put us 10th in the PL attendance lists. As I said, top drawer fans.

Not surprised by Sunderland. The fans have been seeing decline for years and years. If they can start rebuilding properly in League 1 then the fans'll come back.

Look at us. Luckily we changed owner once we were down. The vibes in the Championship have been nowhere like the PL mess.

I think Sunderland fans are quality, I'm not sure we'd average 27.6k if we were bottom of the championship in all honesty. Considering that trek for pretty much every away game down the M1 they don't half take some numbers away too.

I think that's a bit harsh considering the football. Plus the town only has a population of 280k according to Google to the ratio of turnstile ticker to person in the season is pretty commendable.

A club like Villa is lucky as we have a big fan base from the surrounding towns and cities too, which Sunderland doesn't have the luxury of in some respects

They have massive support considering how small their town is. Still, their claim to be a big club is based on a 50k attendance and they have been getting half of that this season.

I do have sympathy for them. That could have been us.

Yep 10th - I suspect 9th really cos West Ham attendances are false because so many away fans go. If Villa were playing some nice football in the PL and in say 9th/10th spot then the place would be pretty full every week. Only Sunderland in the PL would knock us down a peg. Loosely related ... Pompey fans deserve a special mention as well. Shame, TV money keeping the smaller clubs up there, not the fanbase. Al

Sunderland used to give thousands of tickets away to local schools and kids football clubs to fill the stadium.

For sure that's a good thing, it sows the seeds as well. Or they could do an Arsenal and sell season tickets by the shed load to the fickle glory hunting wealthy ones and announce the attendance by tickets sold as opposed to the obvious and then deny tens of thousands of Koln fans access for example. Or it might be an idea to close part of the ground ..... just doesn't compute with those of us who saw the rise from the late sixties and we used to wonder how big the crowds would be if we ever got near division one.

Damned impressive though wasn't it ....... indeed as are Bundesliga attendances and I may say the experience of standing if desired, holding a cold beer and indeed being within reach of the odd opposition fan without feeling the need to either kill, run or make a will

If you live in Newcastle you have to support Newcastle, Sunderland gave tickets away for nothing. 32000 villa 20000 small heath 23000 tesco, 75000 within a 10 mile radius and none of those teams had done bugger all for quite a while.

Yeah ... but when I first went it was 12-13 thousand, 68-69 season opened with a 20 thousand, but 07 december 68 saw a 12 thousand again. Then came the Boxing Day 68 attendance of 41,250 against Cardiff. I was there and it was incredible. Then there were numerous massive attendances in subsequent years, all well documented, but the point is, despite the proximity of other clubs, Villa can pull in massive crowds .... I pray the playoffs open that door.
