Champions League qualification

A good )& concerning) point from the Rolling Results Thread bears the merit of a thread on its own........

The question posed by KCT was

"Am I right in thinking that should the rags win the Europa League then they will be in next seasons CL - and if that is the case do the top 4 still qualify (automatically and via play off)?"

....................

If my interpretation of the rules is correct..........if the rags win the Europa League and finish outside the CL qualifying places then the side in fourth place gets bumped into the Europa League and the rags enter the CL qualifying round in their place.

From UEFA website......

"Regarding the top three associations (currently Spain, Germany and England): if two clubs from one of these countries win the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and neither finish their domestic league in a position that qualifies them for the UEFA Champions League, the following will happen:

– The club that won the UEFA Champions League will go straight into the group stage.

– The UEFA Europa League winners will go into the UEFA Champions League play-offs.

– The club that had qualified for a UEFA Champions League play-off spot via their domestic league competition (i.e. finished fourth) transfer to the UEFA Europa League."

That will only happen if Leicester win the CL and rags win Europa

If the PL remains as it is and the rags win Europa then England will have 5 teams, top 4 and Europa winners. We would go into qualifiers and rags go straight to group stage.

Well, that is a better scenario than I had understood. Phew.

Wonder what the odds are of this coming to pass do we think? 5000/1? :043:

The former Super Foxes strike me as being the sort of coves that like nothing better than pissing on another chaps chips. Wouldn't surprise me if they surprise Athletico before surprising someone else. They are like that.

I will not be sad if Leicester get stuffed - I know we ought to be fans of any British club in Europe but I am not buying the 'plucky Leicester' underdog hype. I think they are an arrogant bunch of twats who, despite all the words, still stuck it to their former manager together with Craig Shakespeare IMO. Their 'turnaround' since Ranieri's departure is more than 'new manager bounce'. Shakespeare's mealy mouthed comments (after Ranieri spoke to SSN) are as interesting for what they didn't say rather than the words he used, a bit like Schmeichel in his post-Ranieri sacking video. I think Shakespeare saw his chance and he took it. You have to get behind someone to stab them in the back.

If Leicester win the CL I will become a rag supporter ie. It's not going to happen.

Oh no Buzz, be very careful what you wish for! It may come to pass.

Even if the Ranieri Assassins do win the CL Stretford wont win the Europa unless they have influence in the committee.

If Leicester and the rags win their respective pots then could we have 6?

No Mr 'tache. In that unlikely event, the team that finishes 4th drops into Europa League
