Chairman's Report

Not really much to report, from the report to be honest. Mostly stuff we've heard but still a very good idea to keep the Chairman connected with the fans.

Interesting things to take away though are the club are planning on initiating an e-ticketing system for the coming season, so you could scan your phone at the turnstile instead. Also Scally said he's going to go down the route of setting up more social media so that he can get his side of the story out. He actually acknowledged Trump as being an inspiration for this!

Nothing much else stands out to be honest, defending the playing budget, being supportive of SL, talking about foreign investment, etc.

No mention of the PL in five years but being inspired by Trump takes the biscuit. Scally is not one who is measured in his approach and it could have a detrimental rather than positive effect.

I don't think Scally meant echo'ing Trump as in banning muslims from travelling to Priestfield or encouraging the stewards to :guns:themselves. You don't have to agree with Trump's opinions but you cannot deny he has a certain mastery of social media and knows how to get his message across.

I wonder how many people who will complain about this are also the people who complained that the club wasn't doing enough to give fans information as to what is happening at the club? I think the only people who will ultimately take constant offence at anything he posts are likely to be people who had a chip on their shoulder in the first place.

I give it a few months before the twitter is closed due to abuse he gets from certain corners of the Gillingham fanbase after complaints from some fans about being blocked.

Why don't we give it a chance to see how it goes?

Historically, it appears that Scally has always been a little bit thin skinned when it comes to criticism or allegations that may or may not be true. The man has a right to defend himself of course, but doing so by going on the attack isn't really a good way to make a cohesive fan base amongst Gills fans. Personally, it's the biggest issue I have with him.

It's one thing when the person making those comments is anonymous and posting on an internet forum, it's something completely different if they're posting it directly to PDPS himself, it's much more personal.

Twitter is a place of complete and utter over-reaction, that's completely instantaneous. Just wait until we lose a game badly, the Scally out lot (of which there is a very vocal section on Twitter), will go mental. They've just been given the man himself as a new target.

Perhaps he will make a success of it, but he'll only be able to do that if he's able to withstand the abuse and not bite back. If he does, he'll only be making himself a bigger target and galvanising more people against him.

It works with Trump because Trump apparently does not give a shit about anything.

I read it right through and thought it was a very honest appraisal of last season.
As for the future ?
Well, if we knew what that held we'd all be millionaires, wouldn't we?

Interesting about the 2.5 million players budget.
As we aspire to be a Championship club, I read this morning that Newcastle spent 112 million on wages in the single EFL season, posting a 90 million loss.
That single figure points out that we'd be so far out of our depth should we get promoted.

I'm not saying don't aspire to it, just be careful what you wish for.
Burton, who as we know were relegated, had a wage bill of about 8 million last season.

God knows what Sunderland will spend next season.
It will be interesting when they play Accy, who's spend last season, according to their manager was 1 million.

Thought it read OK, many fair comments and very Scallyish. Interesting that he highlighted the home form and pointed towards negative reaction from the terraces as having a detrimental effect.

If you can't be optimistic and positive in the close season then you never can. I was agreeably surprised by the general tenor of his commentary; he seems to be making a genuine attempt to reset his relationship with fans. We must welcome that and hope it goes well because it could make a real difference.

Some of the content is less interesting to me but that's inevitable, we all have different priorities. I was pleased to see the efforts made with the open day and the legends match and both went well. The chairman's comments regarding his intention to seek out and build new support are the most welcome part of his report. More encouraging still he has some concrete plans; this is the biggest challenge facing clubs like ours and I wish him well.

Social media? I read and agreed with Gordon_Road_Mat's views on that and share his concerns.

Newcastle is not a good benchmark to make a judgement. They came down with a load of players on good Premier League wages of whom they had no chance of getting rid of because they were overpaid and any transfer would be a worse deal for the player.

You would be better off looking at the average wages of the half a dozen sides who finished above the relegation trapdoor.

I have read this and it does not really tell us anything.

I would be interested to hear more about our plans being agreed by the council for the new stadium.

I'd be quite surprised if PS was actually in total control of the Twitter account and would guess that it would be left to someone else to reply to any criticism posted in his direction. I would think he'd post stuff like good news on signings and development of the club but if ANYONE let's him near the thing after 3pm on a Saturday it would be a recipe for disaster without at least some deep breaths and a good advisor overseeing what was written.
didn't his son used to do the programme? Maybe he'll Scally's Twitter guru if he's still involved around the place.

No matter what people think about PS getting closer to the fans through social media, he can get very tetchy and very easily too. I'd steer clear. In his Chairman's Report, he kind of pointed the finger at the fans for poor performances. To me, it's a chicken and egg situation and, in this case, the fans were always up for it but they can't sustain enthusiasm forever. Had we won the two away matches and the home game against MK Dons, it would have been a different story and he wouldn't have had to point the finger at the fans. Twitter my arse!

Evening gills fans trying to get the earlybird offer but no reply at gfc hq are they open do they want our money 6 of us wanting the early bird offer as season tkt holders let us know please cheers porky

Personally, I reckon anyone who holds public office or a prominent position should keep well clear of Twitter, Facebook and the rest of it. It never ends well.

Plebs like us regularly disgrace ourselves in internet backwaters like this, and that's bad enough, but Scally on Twitter, even mediated by "handlers" - we all know how competent Gills' press teams have been - is a recipe for disaster.

Just try tomorrow morning.

I glad he wrote it and I am glad the he is committing to communicate more in the future. Although like Bromley I think actions speak louder than words.

Scally has always struggled with any questioning of him and as fans and interested parties we will have a view and questions on how the club is run. He owns it but we love it (sometimes) so he has to accept that we have a view and will make incorrect (sometimes) conclusions when we aren't informed by the club. The more you inform us the less we will draw the wrong conclusions.

He just needs to find a way to deal with communicating. I like twitter but all he has to do is block anyone who resorts to abuse. He wants to get in quick though as I expect loads of spoof Paul Scally accounts are being opened as we write.

At the moment I expect lots of positive spin as he is flogging season tickets, but I'll give him the benefit and lets hope he does follow through and improve the communication with the fans. He will need to deal with lots of trolls but hopefully he'll have someone savvy enough to block those people.

The budget I find bizarre. Scally questions how would the Barrow chairmen now what out budget is yet scally is certain that ours is better than most in the division . How would he know unless he is assuming everyone is playing by the 60% fairplay and clubs with similar attendances have similar turnovers and therefore similar 60%s?

At the end of the day we all want GFC to do well and anything to bring the fans and owner closer together and pulling in the same direction is no bad thing.

Interesting times ahead.

Yes indeed. Using the same logic we would be out of our depth in League One because Sunderland will have an enormous budget.

Twitter my arse!

Scally clearly pointed the finger at the booboys and pointed out that shouting out negative and abusive comments were hardly going to have a positive reaction. He certainly wasn't having a go at the majority.

I don't know how many home matches you went you but I'd strongly disagree the fans were always up for it. We were up for it immediately after Lovell got the job but as the performances edged off at 48 points then so did the enthusiasm. Sure there were spells outside that middle 3 months but the rest of the time enthusiasm was always waning.

As for you last point, since Twitter probably bans it, I requested you don't post up an image of your arse for us to use on Twitter.
