Castro

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
I wonder if those waxing lyrical about Castro would like the same oppression, loss of human rights and dictatorship?

Deanovilla put up this video for discussion on my facebook page:

Dunno much about him but am fascinated by how much he splits opinion.

Found this interview very interesting. We do only know what the western media feed us in general.

Few other posts I put up on the thread:

Executed his political opponents. Crushed freedoms. Imprisonment for people playing rock n roll. Abysmal treatment (including forced re education) of homosexuals. On the plus side. Awesome beard and looked very fetching in khaki hats and jackets.

a lady saying he also did a lot of good things I responded:

Actually, he was a bit of a giggle really wasn't he?!

(to which I was told don't believe everything you read on google... !)

What opinion is there to split? Who supports dictatorship? How many free and fair elections did Castro win?

Hmmm. On the news this morning they said he had his own private island , a luxury yacht and a few nice houses.

If that is the case then it doesn't sound like the actions of a true communist.

Well Human Rights Watch see things slightly different from the good Dr

I've just been watching Slavoj Zizek talking about the failures of the left. He talks about the unrest around the world and the general dissatisfaction with neo-liberalism. How real incomes have flat lined while all of the productivity gains have gone to the 1% and still the left don't offer a solution. There is no leftist theory that offers any alternative.

Syriza in Greece were the most recent radical leftist party to win power and they couldn't change anything.

He gave the example of V For Vendetta and how at the end the people rise up against the oppressive government but then the film ends. There is nothing beyond that and that's where the Cuban revolution failed.

We lefties believe that humans are basically decent and that without oppression, we'll be able to express that basic human decency but it isn't an economic theory that will provide for the needs of the people.

I don't know much about how Castro ruled Cuba. Everything I've read has been filtered through an American neo-con media so it always paints him black.

I'm not sure if things would have been different if the Americans hadn't imposed an embargo but in the end the Cuban revolution failed to deliver on its promises.

I know Deano is odd but does he really split opinions?
Plus as you say you don't know much about him, he's getting married but not inviting me.

Senior members of the British government will apparently snub the funeral of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. Prime Minister Theresa May failed even to issue a statement on Castro’s death over the weekend.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn meanwhile confirmed he will be attending the funeral, which will take place on December 4.

I didn't think Corbyn could go any lower in my view of him. I was wrong:

“For all his flaws, Castro’s support for Angola played a crucial role in bringing an end to apartheid in South Africa and he will be remembered both as an internationalist and a champion of social justice.”

He even banned trade unions, so you'd think the left (apart from the communists) would also dislike the man!

Interesting article here from Owen Jones, who presents a remarkably balanced argument considering quite how left-leaning he is:
