Carragher on spurs big game record

Vital Champions League
Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham players must change their record in big matches if they are to bring silverware back to White Hart Lane, says Jamie Carragher.

Since August 2014, Tottenham have won just once in 15 away games against the other teams currently in the Premier League top six.

That streak reflects a wider issue Spurs have in big matches since Pochettino's appointment. Their record against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and ars*nal across all competitions plus Champions League fixtures reads: nine wins out of 37 matches.

"The reason I'm highlighting this is I'm a massive fan of that manager, that team. They can't be remembered over the next 18 months, two years, as a team who didn't win anything.

"I've seen it too often with Spurs, they fail to turn up in big games, maybe going back 20 years. Is it a belief thing? Is it a mentality thing, ingrained in the club?

"At the end of their time at Tottenham - maybe in 10 years' time, maybe in two years, I don't know - you want to be able to say 'I've won that'. Show us your medals. If they don't win big games, they're never going to get there.

"I'm not questioning them for not winning the league or the Champions League, but go and win an FA Cup. Go and win the Europa League. They should be the best team in the Europa League, the players they've got now.

"But if they don't win big games and change these stats, they'll never win anything."

He's right, need to sign some established top quality players to change it, which wont happy unfortunately

Perhaps an Edgar Davids type older player with a pedigree of winning would help out an inexperienced squad.

It's catch 22 at the moment, the manager and squad have no experience of winning things to draw on, and they won't have till they win something :39:

Been thinking this for awhile. Along with being concerned about MP's conservative streak.

I'm not sure MP could handle a strong experienced player properly.

I'm with you mate, get rid, and then get a manager in who knows what he is doing

The scouser is spot on.

But we do have some players that have won trophies.

Hugo= French Cup Winner
Jan = Dutch Champion x2, Dutch Cup Winner x2
Toby = Spanish Champion, Dutch Champion x4, Dutch winner x2, Dutch Super Cup Winner
Wana = Scottish Champion
Dembele = Dutch Champion, Dutch Super Cup Winner
Eriksen = Dutch Champion x4, Dutch Cup Winner, Dutch Super Cup Winner

Also 4 of them players are approaching 30 or are and most of our other players are mid 20's. Our squad maybe young compared to other teams, but our squad is hardly filled with youth and inexperienced players.

We need some experience and leadership in this squad. Everyone lauds are youth but it can also be a drawback. Who is the leader that motivates and pushes these young players in the times when we need it? We need someone on the pitch who can get the best out of us. Poch's half time pep talks aren't going to cut it. Hugo is great, but a goal keeper as captain? It just isn't ideal. Or is a the Capatin role just not what it used to be.

Dutch and Scottish champions are one thing RD, we're talking big boys here !

I'm watching PSG batter Barca in the CL at the moment, we're a million miles away from that level, that's why we went out of a piss poor CL group.

Certainly a different level of quality, but it should build in a winning mentality. To be fair to Hugo, Toby, Vert, Moose, Wana they are probably our most consistent performers.

They are not the problem, as we know our attacking players are inconsistent and our back up players are not good enough. None of them have won anything either.

I never ever see a current Spurs layer shouting and encouraging colleagues or raising the crowd noise level for example,
when the chips are down we need a true leader.
By example....a Mackay or a Perryman or a Mullery even a Parker type...not necessarily silky skills but each of them was a leader and had big never say die hearts !

If you look at our team, who can you see as the leader of the pack. Hardly no one stands out. My bet would be toby alder, he needs to find his voice and lead these lads.

Dier was showing signs of being that guy but now he has been dropped from his best position and being shoe horned in, his confidence has now plummeted.

We are capable of winning silverware, we just happen to fall short when it matters most. Semi-final losses to Pompey & Chelsea, Everton & Newcastle & beaten finalists to Blackburn & Utd is a pitiful record for a club of our stature & this obviously needs to change. Anything is possible if we really put our minds to it, you really need to question why we don't take some of these competitions a little more seriously.

Chelsea now have 38 players £100 million worth of players out on loan, Man City now have 20 players worth around £90mill out on loan.

Manure, Liverpool and ars*nal's revenues have been consistently been some considerable way ahead of ours - even now, outside of their 'starting' 11 their benches makes ours look like the poor cousins.

These clubs have a huge capital employed into assets over the last 10 years advantage over us, in some cases by as much as £500 million.

The PL is the most competitive league in the World, thinking you can ignore these realities or that they can be turned around in the wink of a eye is an example of wishful thinking.

Winning mentality doesn't just come from players it comes with the whole club being able to compete at the top table - we're still someway short of both, but the direction of travel is undoubted.

We are STILL punching above our historic PL financial weight, and soon, within the not too distant future that is going to change - forever.

Poch has alluded to having to change a whole losing mentality at the club, and he's right.

As SP has mentioned, our semi final losses against far inferior opposition has been going on for years, even the current squad can batter anyone at home then perform like relegation candidates away.

As for the money aspect, Leicester disproved that last season, when guess what ?

We bottled it as usual when the chips were going down.

I have a feeling that Sissoko could be a great leader of this team, if given the captaincy... French intl, can drive a team when in CM, and has an eye to score and open up defences with pure running-power with ball...

I'm not totally sure it'll happen now tho'.... pity.

Must try harder dick.

And that's a statement not a reflection.

Hmm, great post...may be. The type I'd expect to read from a company manager towing a company line. I would be more interested in reading your exact route to achieving the holy grail as depicted in your last paragraph.

No disrespect Spursex, but in one line you state "can be turned around in the wink of a eye is an example of wishful thinking" only then to conclude that "soon, within the not too distant future that is going to change - forever" ...how?

If you got 2 for the price of 1 from Specsavers then I'd have your spare rose tinted pair!

To be fair EX Poch blew over 60m on players in the summer, when we were in a great position to move forward. His ability to sign attacking talent is shocking.
