Brereton

Vital Reserves Team
Not Knocking Ben here and that is mainly because of his age and the fact he is still learning his trade.

When he matures and the rough edges have been ironed out I am convinced he will be a great asset for this club. Unfortunately at this moment his all round game is letting us all down - meaning himself - the team and the supporters.

His first touch is abysmal - he doesn't win many headers - his hold-up play is very weak and his first touch in the box means he is not getting his shots away because he needs to much time.

Having outlined my opinions doesn't mean I'm on a crusade to call him blind and rip him to pieces.

There are a lot of games this season that he hasn't contributed much other than his enthusiasm and energy but having to play a lone roll up top is all about leading the line - controlling the ball and bringing others into play and he doesn't do this!!!!

He's been given more than his fair chance and he doesn't seem to be learning, so my answer would be to get a pair of proven strikers in and send Ben out to a Div. 1 side and let him start scoring goals against some of these no nonsense rough necked centre halves.

Having played so many times out wide by Warburton he naturally drifts wide to pick balls up which he need not do now Kranky employs natural wide men.

After all my analysis of young Ben I think he will benefit from time away to learn how to play as a front man and he should learn to stand up more instead of trying to win free kicks in and around the penalty area - he is a big lad and should be doing some bullying of his own.

Spot on. Was just about to start a thread about him. Lets not dress it up, he was very very poor today. Ran lots but he couldnt finish, hold the ball, beat his man, win a header, nothing. With any other half decent striker we'd have had the game won after 30 minutes.

Also, I dont know who has taught him to dive at every opportunity but its beginning to annoy me.

I said on another thread that I would expect it to be another 4 years at least before we start really seeing something from him because of his age.

He needs to be in and around the side constantly for that to happen. But having said that, it is totally unfair to rely on him as the lone striker and source of goals

Earnshaw and assombalonga were playing lower leagues at this age. Harewood was terrible for a long time before he clicked.

I hope brereton progresses and developes. He has had a full season now of experience.

With the pressure off him and a season of good coaching, I expect it to be a lot sooner than that Popey.

Jock is correct. Everyone seems to use Rooney and Owen as yardsticks but they are exceptions to the rule. We have had little choice up front, same as at the back because basically, Warburton fucked us over. Im expecting great things from Ben, and would like to see him at the CG next season and not out on loan to some League One side.

On the Rooney and Owen point- there has been some discussion recently that 10 years at a players (own) top level is about it for most players.

Rooney and Owen were top level early but they were finished as top level players early too- they both managed about ten years.

Ben is a project that we need to develop and there is no rush. If he hits his stride very early it doesn't necessarily mean great things for his career, especially later.

Harewood scored his first in 1998-9 but didn't hit double figures until 2002-3

Brereton's game is raw and presently short of quality at the end, but he has a lot of the raw attributes, physical and mental, to be a very, very good player. Leading the line in a side that is poor at both ends of the pitch, and doesn't get men into the box, is a thankless task and one that all of our strikers have struggled with this season. It's very early days yet and Brereton will benefit from playing so many games this season, and from featuring in a reduced role next season. I still think he has all the potential in the world.

If we are looking for promotion Brereton is not the answer...send him on loan in L1 like we did with Yates...to win promotion we need proven strikers nd not waiting for a kud to develop...if i have to pass my annual assessment on Brereton...i say that he didnt improve from last year...doing the same mistakes ...no progression...having talent at 18 doesnt mean that he is going to improve...lots of players looked promising at an early age nd stalled...many if them ended up in L2 or worse...the chances he missed today were a disgrace...ball control not much better...when he gets the ball he has no idea what to do with it...just run nd most of the times tries to go through a wall of players....

Don't disagree, but it depends what we want next season. Do we want an MW season (stay away from relegation, develop players), or are we seriously aiming for the top six (and ideally top 2). Hopefully it's the latter, in which case Smith, Brereton, Walker and Grant need loan development elsewhere. Maybe Worrall and Yates will too. At the moment Cash seems to have the most to offer.

For all his effort Brereton just isn’t enough of a goal threat. He has all of the attributes but in a struggling team he hasn’t managed to put them all together which is why we have only seen a few decent performances from him.

I honestly believe he will come good in time but a half season loan in league one would do him the power of good.

Arsenal game folk (& not just Forest fanz) were raving about him & talking in terms of £10+ million having a few months under a dour useless manager as a loan striker changes nothing he has skill, instinct & quality.

If he could finish he would be in double figures for the season.

Finishing is surely one of the hardest things to get right at pro level?

I think he has got better under Karanka and is more of a threat than he was before, but the size of the job is too much for him. You look at old pros like Murphy who don't look like they when want to be on the pitch and realise the size of it.

Wish he would stop diving though

He has improved recently but is it enough? Maybe a good preseason and better players around him will help but I think he needs to go and learn the finishing part and he may be best served going on loan to do that.

he still reminds me a lot of kane attribute wise. hes a monster in his age group and could be playing u23's for the next 5 years almost surely puts it in perspective. But sure, not as our lone striker, thats just daft. Tho nothing will change me wanting to play 2 up front at home whoever plays :)

Lots of talk yesterday in Bolton from around the Forest Fans...many hearing of a 15 million striker from Spain coming our way.....no names mentioned though....I wait with baited breath

He will learn very little playing for a Lg 1 side. He is championship level. At his age, being 1 year older is a substantial difference. Not only is he learning with each game but will be bigger and stronger and getting in to those crucial positions a split second earlier. Playing lone striker (with two well versed central defenders marking you) is the most difficult and challenging position and unfortunately playing it is the only way of learning it. I am confident that Ben will suddenly click. A couple of goals off his shin and backside will give him confidence and he will start scoring regularly. Unfortunately he is playing in a team that can't or won't pick him out when he runs the channels and offers little support. How many times is he the only player in the box or making a forward run. Our midfield run sideways.
Paz suggests he reminds him of Kane. At 18, Kane was not scoring for Leyton Orient. At 19 he was sitting on the bench at Leicester. He hit the headlines with a bang for Spurs when 20. Ben is ahead of Kane in that he is playing regularly two leagues higher. No guarantee but....
I can see Ben, Matty Cash, Joe Worrall and Yates all in the team regularly next year. Even with a £15M player. (can't see that happening,. If you are worth £15M would you come to Forest when other options available).
The likes of Edser, Ahmedhozovic, Iacovetti, Walker, Preston and even Appiah may benefit from loans. I fear Grant and Clough will be open to offers from other clubs. Players like Gomis and Johnson will be playing at U23 level.
Finally can we get a goalkeeper who will catch a ball not punch it and command his 6 years box.

Polly ...yesterday BB missed 3 sitters ... at least two of them, he just needed his shin to hit the ball to score... as said above, I havent seen much improvement from the kid, apart from physical, he spends too much time waving his hands for imaginary fouls, keeps protesting with the refs and game offcials...not the best of receipts..

I don't agree he has improved under AK. I think he's been worse. He is young, Pope is right, but personally the only thing he's been good at is running with the football. Everything else has been poor. I think he was far more effective as a wide forward under MW. Shouldn't be starting next season if we are aiming for a promotion challenge. Come on from the bench.

He didn't score any goals as a wide forward for MW did he?

He was absolutely dire in that position and people were screaming for him to be moved into his proper position.

Karanka has done that, mostly because of the decline of Murphy and lack of other options.

I think Ben has 4 goals since he was moved to his proper position?
