The Blades got back to winning ways on the road and made it back-to-back victories after the two defeats at Leeds and Middlesbrough had punctured an excellent start to their return to the Championship. United travelled to Ewood Park for the lunchtime kick off and a ground that has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years but goals from Harrison Burrows and Tyreese Campbell saw off a poor Rovers side. Blackburn did have two good opportunities at 0-1 but Michael Cooper did not have a save to make in contract to Ainsley Pears whose performance kept the scoreline down in the second half. United completely controlled the game after the break and with Souza dominant in midfield, the excellent Moore leading the line and Souttar patrolling at the back, United’s strong spine was too much for a punchless home side who never really looked like getting anything from the game.

Wilder made 2 changes in his starting line up with Brewster and Robinson in for Campbell and the suspended Ahmedhodzic. Rovers also tweaked their line up with Ohashi back in as the lone striker supported by Dolan and Cantwell.

The game started with United winning an early corner but Souza then had to do some sterling defensive work to recover a break going the other way. Travis and then Rak Sayki both won free kicks deep in their own territory as it swung both ways in the opening stages. Robinson was caught out by Ohashi and this led to Blackburn winning their first corner. Soon after the first real opening came as the dangerous Ohashi came inside and Gilchrist had to make the block. Blackburn had most of the possession and territory and had settled better with the loose stuff being picked up by those in blue and white.

Moore then won a free kick to give United some relief as Hyam was penalised for handball. Burrows took it but hit the wall, as he did last week in a similar position. Souza had issues with his boot laces as he claimed he was fouled but soon after this the Blades took the lead with their first real chance. The ball was moved across patiently with Rak Sayki involved and Arblaster opted not to take the shot on initially but Souza did. The ball flashed across goal and Rankin Costello botched his clearance leading to the ball dropping to BURROWS. The ex-Posh man had a lot to do but drove in a superb angled drive into the far corner for his first Blades goal.

Moore then did well to hold the ball up twice and fed Rak Sayki and the winger played it back to Moore and his cross was intended for O’Hare but the Blackburn defender made a crucial block. United were buoyed by the goal and Rak Sayki was a constant threat as he was causing all sort of problems for the young full back Beck. Twice he went past him in quick succession and on the second occasion, he found Brewster whose shot was blocked.

Souttar had to be alive to deny Ohashi after some loose stuff from Arblaster. The young midfielder did not learn his lesson and gave it away cheaply again and this led to a great chance for Rovers to level. Ohashi made the running fed the overlapping Dolan whose cross seemed certain to be converted by the oncoming Hedges but the midfielder inexplicably did not make any contact with the goal gaping.

United’s sloppy play continued as they continued to cough up possession cheaply which was disappointing as they seemed to have control of the game after an uncertain start and had Blackburn worried when they did attack. The home fans started to find their voice and Dolan’s skill saw him move past Robinson and the experienced defender cynically brought him down earning him a yellow card – the first of the game.

The home fans frustration with the referee seemed to be boiling over and his inability to spot an advantage after Arblaster brought down his man did not help their mood. Rovers won a late corner but United cleared and went into the break with a narrow lead.

United started the second half well and won a free kick and two corners. From an Arblaster free kick, Moore’s header was pushed over by Pears and United kept the pressure on in a positive start. O’Hare was booked for a handball as Rovers looked to break. Ohashi tried to get away from Burrows but Robinson shepherded it out for a corner. Blackburn did have a great opportunity when Cantwell sent over a dangerous cross and Rankin Costello could not get enough on his header. It was a good opportunity and a let off for United’s otherwise excellent defence.

Brewster had gone down on a couple of occasions and his ran was finally run when he came off for Campbell, as the striker limped of after another ineffective display. Burrows put in a superb cross that saw Moore head across the goal and Hyam had to nod off the line. Weimann and Brittain replaced Dolan and Hedges but soon after United doubled their lead.

Souza won the ball in the middle of the field, as he had done all day and Arblaster helped it on. Moore did superbly to fend off his man, came inside and picked out CAMPBELL but although his first effort was too close to Pears and pushed out, the striker kept his composure to acrobatically smash the ball home. His second chance was probably harder than his first but it was superbly finished and it was two in two for the former Stoke man, as he celebrated in front of the 4,000 travelling Blades fans.

Hamer and Brooks came on for O’Hare and Rak Sayki as United looked to rotate the side with three games in 8 days but Rankin Costello showed this game was not done as he picked up the ball and curled wide after Ohashi stole the ball from Souza on the edge of the box.

Moore’s excellent hold up play has been a feature of United’s display and his work rate and skill was shown in a passage of play where he held off his man twice and kept United high up the field. One move saw Burrows nearly get a strike away before Moore twice was involved as it fell for Brooks who played a one two with Arblaster but his shot lacked power and was straight at Pears.

Ohashi had a chance but Burrows got back to make a tackle before a triple chance came with the Japanese man departing, along with Travis and Rankin Costello. Gueye, Pickering and Buckley came on. Cantwell stole down the right beating the offside trap but his cross was poor and Cooper scooped it up.

Souza got absolutely smashed by Gueye with a leading elbow and it was surprising that the card was only yellow. Replays showed what a horrific challenge it was and he was extremely fortunate not to be sent back where he had only just come from!

Moore then was in the wars and was bleeding around his ear as his strong play continued to be a focal point for United who had dominated most of the second half. Arblaster had improved and with the excellent Souza, able to continue after the challenge, United were controlling the middle of the field. There were chances for more goals for the visitors and often it came from Moore’s strong work and then Souza’s link play. Burrows had a chance after Arblaster found him but took too long before the young midfielder fed Hamer who tried an effort with the outside of his foot but Pears saved. Campbell then found Moore whose low shot was turned round the post.

Rovers were now looking a spent force and Moore excellent work saw him return the favour in feeding Campbell but Pears got out to spread himself. The ball dropped and Arblaster tried a lobbed finish, like the one Hamer scored at Preston on opening day, but this effort lacked power and Pears got back to make the catch before it dropped over the line.

Hamer then did well to outpace Cantwell and from the resulting move, Burrows was in again but his drive was just wide of the far post with Pears this time seemingly well beaten. Burrows continued to look a threat and had another run down the left but his cross was blocked off. Due to the stoppages to Souza and Moore, there was to be 8 minutes of stoppage time but United continued to look the more likely to score again. Hamer was played in by Souza and Pears seemed to use his hands to deny a third goal, as he raced off his line but the officials felt it came off his chest.

Gilchrist and McCallum came off for Seriki and Moore but United were easing to the win and saw off two late long throws with comfort and kept another clean sheet as they moved up to second before the afternoon kick offs.

United – It was much like the wins at Preston and Hull in that we won and rather comfortably. Got the goals at great times and could have had a lot more. Cooper did not have save to make and Pears made several. I thought the spine of our team was outstanding and although we were sloppy at times to begin the game, the longer the match went on, the stronger we got and completely dominated the midfield. Thought Souttar, Souza and Moore were the three outstanding players on the field and their strength, skill and composure was too much for Blackburn who looked weak and ineffective for much of the contest.

First half there was little in the game. Thought they started well and looked a threat with Ohashi getting in good areas and Robinson a bit rusty but as the half went on, we started to get control and Rak Sayki was a constant threat. We had a few opportunities but the goal came after we were patient with the ball, they failed to clear but an excellent finish and showed the quality of Burrows left foot. After this Blackburn did have a spell and Hedges missed a good chance. We became sloppy and thought half time came at a good time as we were giving the ball away unnecessarily.

After the break we came out and imposed ourselves. Moore was superb and they had no answer for him. He could and should have (deserved one) a goal but Arblaster improved and we picked up most things in the middle. Burrows continued to be an outlet and we looked like we could score – which has not been the case in all the recent games. Blackburn did have a headed chance when we switched off again but that was it really. After this let off, we stepped it up and Campbell finally gave Moore another player to link with and they did this a few times – including the goal which Moore did superbly but Campbell also did well to react and fire home a chance that was not easy.

After this, we coasted to the win really and Burrows could have had a few, Moore could have had a few and we had gaps all over. It was odd, as it was not like Blackburn were throwing men forward or having chances. They sort of gave up and did not look a threat as Souttar and co just swatted them away. They made changes but it made no difference at all. I thought with better finishing it could/should have gone to 3 or 4 really. We looked a good side that just kept the ball well, defended when we had to and looked a threat. I do think Blackburn were poor but we made them look poor- not sure they had lost at home before today and were 6th (shows how poor the division is though too). In the end, it was an easy win but was easy as second half in particular we did all the dirty work and picked up every loose ball and the midfield area we bossed with Souza superb again. I thought they never got to grips with Moore and in the end, it was pretty one sided and a thoroughly deserved win with a very good performance.

Still concerns about the impact of the likes of O’Hare and Brewster and I think we still were careless at times with the ball and made it harder for ourselves but then Blackburn were far worse in this regard so maybe I am nit picking. Excellent start to the week and hopefully we can get something (you would have taken 4 points from 6) at Bristol City before the Sheffield derby next Sunday.

Ratings:

Cooper 6/10 – Solid handling first half and his kicking was good again apart from one out of play. Looks determined to control his box and come off his line. Looked comfortable again. Few chances they had they missed. Did not have a save to make. Caught a few late crosses. Looks a superb signing. Hard to mark much higher as had very little to do!

Gilchrist 6/10 - Saw the good and bad again as he was competitive, won tackles and got to the ball but also got caught a few times and his passing was sometimes overhit. He did make a few good blocks too. He is frustrating with his touch as it comes off him too much but he does work hard to get back and make tackles.

Burrows 8/10 – Continued his good start at the club. He used it well and got well forward and put in some decent balls but then scored a beauty showing his quality with the left foot. He then kept bombing forward and had so many good chances and the only knock was his final product when he did have shooting chances although one just past the post and another blocked when he took too long. A few superb crosses over to Moore too. They just kept leaving him time after time and he had so much space. Did the defensive bits when he had to – although twice he gave too much time down the wing to Cantwell. Another who looks such a shrewd signing and with him and Cooper we have two players we would hope to tie down two positions for years to come.

Robinson 6.5/10 – Definitely saw a drop off in terms of his limitations to start the game – he often just kicks it out when under no pressure and will not use his right foot. He did make some interceptions and improved for a period but then a stupid booking put him under pressure. However, thought second half he did improve and was first to the ball, came out with it well and did what he had to.

Souttar 7.5/10 – Rock solid with his reading of the game and defensive work in terms of just stepping in and seeing things off. He made several clearances and his combination with Cooper is a huge asset in terms of control of the backline.

Souza 8/10 – Excellent game yet again where he just controlled the game. His tackling, reading of the game and composure was a joy to watch. He seemed to be everywhere and the ball magnetised to him. First half where he won the loose stuff, used it well and tried to drive it forward. Got frustrated with a few decisions but kept going and helped make up for Arblaster’s poor spell covering his mistakes quite a few times. Second half got even better and also was involved in some of our better attacks – playing in forward players for chances. Won the tackle for the goal, nearly fed Hamer with a lovely ball and just looked excellent. Rarely gave the ball away. Close between him and Moore for man of the match. Not sure I could split them?

Arblaster 6/10 – Improved last week after a drop off but sadly he was off it again first half and kept giving it away, often under little to no pressure. He did a few ok things and involved in the goal and some attacks but his lack of pace we saw today as quicker midfielders broke away from him in the first half. Second half he was so much better. Used it well, sharper to the loose balls and more careful with everything he did. Did well in the build up to the second and had other moments where he was influential in attacks we had. Does need to find come consistency though as he has been a bit up and down recently. We forget how young he is and credit to him for turning round a poor first half to really up it second half.

Rak Sayki 7/10 – Our best player in terms of threat and caused all sorts of problems. Few decent runs and crosses. Few times he made the wrong decisions but he kept going at the full back who really struggled with him. We kept feeding him and he kept getting deep into Blackburn territory. Fed Brewster and O’Hare for chances and he did get his head up more today. He is a real outlet for us to have. Second half not as involved as we tended to go more down the middle or the left and then came off. Did work hard and do some defensive bits too.

O’Hare 5/10 – Thought he was busy and got into little areas but little end product again and is weak, getting shoved off it too easily. He did keep working hard but his game drops off massively after the first part of games and second halves we see little of him. I do not think he is lazy but lacks pace and strength and that makes it hard for him as he often has the ball round the middle so rarely looks a threat as gets crowded out. I thought he did some ok things but he is not really an influence when he was brought in to create or score goals and does not do that at the moment. Hamer’s cameo was not great though but expect them to be swapped this week?

Brewster 4.5/10 – Not really in the game at all. One shot blocked but seemed to hide and not be an outlet. Just looked lost and does not work hard enough. His link play was not secure enough and just not really giving us a ball. Also lost the ball a few times when he needed to be better at keeping it. Fell over a few times and thought he was injured and coming off and finally he did come off, with a sort of limp. He has had a few ok cameos as sub but he has offered very little when he has started and seems to lack the energy or stamina to work defenders. To see him jogging around is frustrating as he is not scoring or looking likely to even score so he has to work hard for the team. Think at most, he is best as a 10–15-minute sub put on to run around. His impact currently is very minimal and Campbell has at least looked a threat or got close to Moore.

Moore 8/10 – Thought he led the line brilliantly today and that was his best overall game for United. He started slowly and a few times he was asking for fouls rather than getting on with it but thought he got little protection. In some of our better moves first half he did lead the break. Decent header second half tipped over and then after this he was superb. The only thing missing was a goal really and he should have had one. Linked well with others, particularly Campell and Burrows and he was a constant threat running the channels, as well as holding it up. They never got hold of him and had to resort to fouling him. He got banged, smashed, and cut but kept coming back for more. That is the Moore we thought and expected we had signed. Had some totally anonymous games, not helped by little help or service but today he was superb and felt the ball almost always stuck with him and us when played up to him. His clever passing and link play was also McBurnie-esque 2nd half. Superb on the second goal and assisted on several others that nearly led to more goals.

Subs -

Campbell 7.5/10 – Got involved and got another goal. He took his goal well, probably should have done better on the first chance but smashed in brilliantly when I was waiting for it to fly over! Had a few other chances and one effort saved but he used it well and looked busy. He was much better than last week when he also scored but his overall play and ability to get close to Moore made a big difference. Not sure he is that quick or mobile but he now has 2 in 2 and at least provides us with a goal threat which Brewster and O’Hare do not.

Hamer 5.5/10 – Been in and out with injuries/suspensions not helping him get on a run of games or consistency but even when he played thought his form was off the excellent play we know he can show. Maybe he is not fully fit and that is why he is being used sparingly? Today when he came on, he gave it away three times in succession but then worked hard to get the ball off Cantwell and had a few decent efforts, a shot with the outside of his foot and then nearly got in when Souza played him through. I think he will start the derby and hopefully he will step up and show the quality we know he has on the big occasion.

Brooks 5/10 – Thought he was frustrating when he came on. Got the ball a few times in decent areas but he had one good one two and another weak shot – almost a back pass and a few other times he was slow to react as the ball came to him. Must be hard when he is in and out but Rak Sayki looks the better option currently – there is an argument he needs a start instead of O’Hare maybe but expect Hamer to come in for him soon.

McCallum – Showed he can come on and be an energetic rotation player – won a header when he was second favourite and helped another down the line.

Seriki – Only on briefly at the end – did seemed to get fouled near the end but it mattered little as they were not offering anything.

Manager: Wilder 8/10 – A solid 2-0 win where we did what we had to and in the end won rather easily. First half was a bit mixed and we seemed loose but whatever he said at half time, clearly worked. It was our best 2nd half performance of the season and we completely bossed it. We stepped up in terms of winning our tackles, headers and races and swarmed all over them. We seemed to play higher up the field and the subs with Campbell giving them more to think about, made sure we put the game away. In the end, we just moved it around sensibly, got into good areas and with a touch better composure would have been a bit of a battering for the home side. Will be pleased we continued the excellent defensive display (did have two moments we switched off and they missed decent chances) but also looked far more of a goal threat than we have done for some time and Pears made so many saves second half. Think we may see 4 or 5 changes in the week, with one eye on the derby and would not knock him for that as will be hard for us to play same 9,10 or 11 for three successive games and of course, whilst both games give us the same opportunity for three points, the game next Sunday is undoubtedly a huge one for the fans and the manager.

Blackburn – I expected them to struggle as they had been right near the bottom last year and lost their best player in Szmodics. They brought in a few experienced players like Batth, McFadzean, Cantwell and Weimann but seem to be lacking in real quality. Yuki Ohashi has done well to start the season and they did invest in the Senegalese striker Gueye. Eustace was harshly let go by Brum and did enough to keep them up and seems to have got them organised and decent defensively but I feared they would be around the bottom but as they often seem to do – got off to a flyer and were right near the top. I remember them doing this a few years ago when we went up and they dropped off. I do expect the same this year but the manager may actually have enough to see them fend off the drop – something I tipped but having seen so many other bad teams, I may have misjudged them in terms of being the ones to go. The good start has helped. The fans seems to suggest they are solid and don’t concede loads but much like us, they do not score many too. They seem strong at home and traditionally we have struggled there – I can only recall the one win in the promotion season in recent times and we have had some awful performances in recent visits. Recall the shocking display under Jokanovic when we got done 3-1 but it should have been double that. That was a team with Sharp, Berge, Gibbs White and Ndiaye and several other experienced players. Even in the promotion season under Hecky, we lost meekly 1-0 I recall.

Today, they started ok and had a decent spell to begin but did not threaten much. Ohashi looked dangerous but they lacked much of a thrust and any real physicality or pace at the top of the field. After their initial start, United settled and got the goal. They had another spell before half time and a chance via Hedges but it was a game United still seemed in control of and they struggled with Moore and Rak Sayki when we attacked. I thought they would have more of a go after the break but the opposite happened and we dominated most of this half. We could have had a few straight after the interval and pushed them back but then they had a headed chance from a rare break but Cooper was not troubled and after the second, it was done. Burrows x 2, Moore x 2, Campbell and Hamer could have got more goals and made it even more routine but Pears made several saves. In the end Blackburn looked a bit dispirited. Not sure they were clear how to approach hurting us as Souza and Souttar were mopping anything up in the air or physically but when they went down the sides, did not put many dangerous crosses in outside the two good chances (we had about 6 or 7 as good though in terms of dangerous opportunities). In the end, they lacked the belief and it was a bit like us at Leeds, in the sense they just knew they were a better and more powerful opponent.

I still think they may struggle even despite the start they had and today they looked really punchless and did not offer much of a threat. United controlled the spine of the pitch and they offered little threat. Even with the additional time, not sure they really felt like they had any impetus or territory and at 0-2, United looked the more likely to score again. Well beaten in the end.

Opponent Man of the Match – Ohashi was a threat, buzzing in and around and worked hard but got little service and was feeding off scraps. Outside of this not sure anyone impressed. Pears kept the score down and was only other who came out with much credit. Cantwell had a few moments but his drop off in terms of team he plays for shows he was never as good as he thought he was!

Opponent Weak link – Batth and Hyam struggled with Moore all game and never got to grips with him but the young lad Beck, on loan from Liverpool, was given a bit of a run around from Rak Sayki and surprised they kept him on.

Travis and Cantwell are both irritating and the former moans and groans but is one of the dirtiest players at this level. Today Souza just completely outplayed all of the Rovers midfield on his own!

Referee/Officials – Oliver Langford. Bit frustrating at times. A nothing sort of game but it became very stop start although Moore was given a bit of a going over I felt despite the crowd pleading for free kicks on him! Robinson’s was rightly a booking for a cynical foul although O’Hare was a bit unlucky I felt as hit his foot and onto his hand? The rest of the game just thought he was a bit fussy. The advantage he failed to give them near half time summed it up and can understand the home fans frustration there. He failed to spot an obvious and dangerous challenge that was as clear a red card as you could see from the sub-Gueye. A horrid elbow that was done with force and intent and could have seriously injured Souza. I also though the lob at the end did hit Pears on the hand and they kind of bottled this?

Cooper - 7 - great hands
Gilchrist - 7
Souttar - 7
Robinson - 7
Burrows - 8 - first time he's looked as expected offensively
Souza - 8
Arblaster - 6
Sakyi - 7
Brewster - 4 - Campbell has now overtaken him
O'Hare - 5 - please drop this little spice boy
Moore - 8

I don't often disagree with D_B's scores but I thought O'Hare played well again today. I thought he had plenty of good moments like his involvement in one of the goals. A steady 7 from me.

Can’t argue with much of that I’d tend to go with herbies scores as the performance for me was the best of the season I gave the mom to Moore just over Souza I likened moores performance more to shipperley rather than mcburnie I hope he can carry that on for the rest of the season. I think Chris is getting desperate now with brewster keeps playing him in the hope he will come good and save face for him after pissing so much money up the wall for him, it’s not going to happen Chris cut your losses you can see in his play he doesn’t have the drive and desire needed to get in scoring positions regularly and has lost his composure in and around the goal due to a lack of confidence, time to move on and like has been said try him late on in games only cos we have no one else we all wanted him to come good but there comes a time …..
As I said last week you can only beat what’s in front of you and we did that comprehensively just need to carry it on and not get too cocky we all know how well underdogs do in the derby 🫤

If Moore can score as many as Shipperley now that would be a good outcome.

He's not as good as McBurnie but if he can start 40 games he may be more valuable over a season.

If we can just add Brereton, and keep Moore fit, that will be enough for a top 2 spot.

"Souza won the ball in the middle of the field, as he had done all day and Arblaster helped it on. Moore did superbly to fend off his man, came inside and picked out CAMPBELL"

Souza didn't win the ball, the invisible man did. 5.25 min in...

Yep, it was Spice Boy's tackle. No, not the body parts he surely exposes to black men, I mean his ball winning challenge. It's the nearest he's got to an assist for 8 games.
