Loathing of former Prime Minister was plain at a Q&A session with manager Martinez and plan for Wembley is now likely to be shelved
Wigan fans are fuming with chairman Dave Whelan over his request for the side to wear black armbands for the late Margaret Thatcher at Wembley on Saturday.
Tory-backer Whelan wants his Latics to pay tribute to the former Prime Minister at the FA Cup semi-final against Millwall – but the mere idea of such a gesture has gone down badly with the public.
Whelan has put forward a suggestion of a minute’s silence too, but the Latics supporters are enraged about their team also wearing armbands to honour the hugely divisive politician.
Angry fans made their feelings known at a question and answer session with manager Roberto Martinez – and one got up to say: “It’s a disgrace – I bloody hate Margaret Thatcher.”
Now Martinez and his players will decide on what to do at the semi-final, but they are likely to tell chairman Whelan that it would not be a good idea to pursue such a tribute.
